I think its a brilliant idea.

I think we also have almost all the monument pictures already taken. All there is needed is to get those who have the monuments pictures to upload them under a free license.

I personally do not have pictures of monuments in my records, and even where I live has got only one monument i think ( i live in Koforidua, Ghana)

Also, it is true we do not have articles on wikipedia about almost all the monuments in Ghana.

I will see how best i can go to encourage the organizations in Ghana that have nice photos of such monuments to license them for free use and I will work on documenting such monuments on wikipedia

Thanks for the resource links

that sounds nice as well! but let me give a little more detail on wiki
loves monuments (WLM), and a couple of links.

the goal of WLM is that people take fotos of national monuments and
upload them to wikimedia commons under a free license. the best ones
get a prize. the basis is usually a list of monuments from some
government body or whoever feels responsible. for ghana i found a
little map: http://www.touringghana.com/tourist_sites.asp. interesting
is that there is no (or little) articles about all these sites, the
same true for photos.

an idea could be to do some "mini WLM": switch on a banner for the
month of september, linking to some page describing how to register an
account, create an article, add a foto to an article, upload a foto to
commons and as well the little list of monuments above. don't let you
frighten by the timeline of the full-blown wlm contest though.

an additional benefit would be if the ghana organizer could contact
the tourist ministery or heritage ministery to have some blessing in
general and for the list in special.

links to wlm:

* http://www.wikilovesmonuments.ph/ - one of the better chapter sites

what do you think?

Setting up this is entirely possible, and something any admin on Meta-Wiki
can do (e.g. me ;-) ). Banners can be shown for people with Ghanaian IPs
only, you can read a bit more about the system (called CentralNotice) here:

What would be nice would be a page somewhere (perhaps Meta) about how and
why people should contribute, that the banner can point to. I think that
would be better than a banner just saying "contribute", but with no more
information. I don't think there have been any campaigns like this (to get
people to contribute to Wikipedia in general) though, so it might need a
wider discussion in the Meta community. But I think it is a good idea, for
what it's worth.

To take the, imo, most prominent and easy to reach example, Projects are
displayed, eg wiki loves monuments in September. This might be geolocalized
to a Ghana page or site.

And if it is designed with a little care it might bring editors and
photographers.

The rest of the year is blocked by the fundraiser.

Hello,

For me, I know that there are at times banners display on homepages of
wikimedia projects website like wikipedia. Some of these banners actually
inform about upcoming events or ongoing project.

I will like to ask how those banners are put there. Is that
banner-display opportunity open to all or its restricted?

I ask because, I think a banner display on all article requests to
Wikipedia from Ghana (and Ghana only) directing attention to the ongoing
planning of the Wikimedia Ghana will really be worth-the-while.

I know many Ghanaians research on Wikipedia. However, majority of them
never know of any ways whatsoever to contribute. Such a banner display will
really improve traffic to the Wikimedia Ghana meta site and at least more
awareness will be created.

Jon and Rupert, any ideas?

Thanks.
