Dear community members,
Over the years, the Wikimedia Ghana User Group has operated a centralized community-building model to support Ghanaian Wikimedians. This approach was useful in avoiding duplication of hubs. Additionally, there had been limited funding for creating and supporting autonomous groups.
However, based on feedback from community members seeking more local connections, localized events, and capacity-building opportunities for local facilitation, we are reviving regional community building and this time, expanding to all 16 regions of Ghana.
To avoid confusion, we will avoid using the word hub due to its use in the Wikimedia movement; we will call them nodes.
Features of a node:
We have designed nodes to be lightweight groups of Wikimedians who are based in a region and can support the facilitation of events and activities for their regions and participate in them. Node members will have a WhatsApp group chat to manage community conversations.
Nodes will have leads whose duties are to:
Support the user group in organizing Wikimedia-related activities within the region.
Support facilitators with logistics for events in the region.
Accept capacity building or regional updates from the Wikimedia Ghana User Group where needed.
Update the user group leadership and escalate any matters on community health and progress.
How to Join a Node:
To join a node, you must be based in the region as a student, worker or local. That’s all you need. You don’t have to be a member of the Wikimedia Ghana User Group. Please use this link to find the regional groups on Whatsapp: https://chat.whatsapp.com/IMM0sx5nJU364LJAhzuild
To manage notifications, feel free to mute the announcements section of the community, as every action taken within any community generates a notification.
Node Leadership:
If you are interested in leading a node, please email community@wmgh.org and cc r.obiri@wmgh.org.
Thank you all for being an integral part of this exciting new chapter for the Wikimedia Ghana User Group.
Best regards,
Board of Wikimedia Ghana User Group
