I still stand by MTN charging for Wikipedia.

Listening to radio advert seems to confirm this.

A friend at my school also just told me.

Somebody read this [1]

If MTN wasn't charging for Wikipedia access, there wouldn't have been data bundles with FREE Wikipedia access. Am done! :(

I'm sure Enock did provide the details requested by Dan in email below.

And thus, I must believe the Zero on MTN is working as usual?

Hi Enock,

The way most partners zero-rate is that they do not charge you when using Wikipedia, but if you have a no-balance sim card, they may not allow internet access at all.  Then, you cannot get to the internet to have Wikipedia zero-rated.

I'm not sure about all the types of service that MTN Ghana offers.  When you are using your laptop with Firefox, is this using the MTN cellular service on your phone?

It would also be helpful if you could provide us your IP when you are trying to use Wikipedia Zero with a balance but do not see a banner.  Please try a site like www.whatismyip.org  or similar service and let us know the IP you are using.  Then I can check it against our known IP ranges for MTN Ghana.

Thanks!
Dan

Hi Dan,

I used Firefox on my laptop.

Update: Tried accessing with Zero balance SIM (both Chrome and Firefox), WIkipedia homepage is loaded once and that's all. You can't access any other page or reload.

Best.

Hi Enock,

I'm looking into the problem you described, and needed to check on one additional detail.   Which browser are you using when you experience the billing / lack of banners?   I notice that many users in Ghana are using the Opera browser.  If you were using that before, can you try the standard browser on your phone (usually Chrome on Android) and let us know if that works?

Thanks!
Dan

You're welcome. Noted.

Exactly.

Yes.

GH Wikimedians,

If you're using MTN in your smartphone your help will be very useful.

PS: I know the banner isn't displayed in the desktop version :).

Hi Enock,

Thank you for flagging the issues described below. For future reference, feel free to add me directly when you need my attention and/or reply.
As far as I understand, you - Enock - used WP through MTN and was charged. On top of that, no free WP banners were displayed both on the desktop version and mobile version. Is that correct? If that is the case, we will have to investigate with MTN.
Please note that we don't show "Free Wikipedia" banners on the desktop version as part of the Wikipedia Zero program. Only the mobile site displays banners so it's expected that you won't see the WP Zero banner when using WP's desktop version.
Please confirm if you were using m.wikipedia.org (mobile site) when the banners flashed and didn't display correctly. That is not an expected behavior and if confirmed, we will follow up internally and also with MTN.

Dan Foy, our technical partner manager, is on vacation this week. We will have to wait for him to come back to the office next week to properly follow up on this.

Enock - I will be awaiting for your reply on the questions above. It will be really helpful to better understand your experience.

Rexford and others - If you would like to volunteer to test the service, please make sure you are using the mobile version of Wikipedia (m.wikipedia.org). Please pay special attention to the banner behavior and data charges.

Best,
Adele

Thus, I understand you as, when (kindly confirm if below conditions are so)
  • you opened the Desktop Version on the PC, no banner was shown
  • you opened the Mobile Version on PC, the banner 'flashed'. Nothing banner-ish showed afterwards
  • you opened the Mobile Version on Mobile, no banner was shown
Its good you've brought this up. I'm sure Adele is on this list, plus if that's the case, then we'll kindly ask Adele to look into that for us.

thanks

Did you see the Wikipedia Zero banner or anything of that sort, indicating you're browsing for free in your browser?

Greetings,

Is been a long time I tried using Wikipedia Zero [1] from MTN Ghana on PC. I remember I started using WP Zero before it was announced officially; that during the piloting.

Yesterday, I tried to access Wikipedia from MTN thinking Zero is still in control. By the time I realized my 60 GHp was no where to be found after visiting just two pages.

I don't know if the problem is from me or MTN. If you're using MTN I'll plead with you to try on your PC and Smartphones so we can know what is actually going on.

Best,
