Hello dear Ghanaian community,
Hope this message finds you well.
As some of you might know, one of the things the Wikipedia Zero team has learned is that WMF and the broader movement needs more specific data about Wikipedia’s usage in Africa. We have decided to conduct a survey in Ghana as our first pilot. Our survey is a phone-based one, and will offer a choice of using one of the most commonly used languages in Ghana (Twi, English, Dagbani, Hause and Ewe). The purpose of the survey is to learn more about the awareness of Wikipedia and Wikipedia Zero, the use of internet-capable phones, and receive general feedback about Wikipedia (among the respondents who know about us).
Our survey will be done by VotoMobile, a Ghana-based organization that has considerable experience conducting these kinds of surveys. The survey will begin sometime in August, and we will reach out to several thousand MTN subscribers in order to learn more about the opportunities to improve Wikipedia’s awareness and usage within Ghana. The data will be publicly available once the survey is completed.
I would like to introduce to take this opportunity to broadly introduce Dan Foy, our senior technical partner manager, who will be leading this project. Dan will also be taking on part of my current responsibilities while I am out on maternity leave. Also, I would like to introduce Jorge Vargas who will be working with MTN Ghana during my leave.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to Dan or Jorge in case you have further questions or comments.
Warm regards,
