I think one thing I have forgotten to push here that worked for me when I first joined is initiative. Go out there, and find things to do.
Sometimes I think discovering mistakes and coming to ask the group to edit together is a waste of time. We should just go ahead and fix stuff. I have done that with the Ghana article.
There is a "robot" called SuggestBot that posts articles that need your help on your user talk page. Google it and install it if you haven't already. Set it to Ghana related articles.
If you really want to advance in your editing, look it up to help you find articles easily.
I think by the end of this year all of us should improve/create/nominate to delete/different useful Wikipedia tasks on about 100 articles. SuggestBot will help meet your target.
