Digital Capital Week is happening this year November 4-11.  --
http://digitalcapitalweek.org/

This includes a big series of tech events, and free culture / information
definitely fits in the scope.  I think this is a great opportunity to help
get the word out more and for us to connect with folks in DC.

Is there interest for us to organize any event(s) during Digital Capital
Week?  If so, what do you have in mind or would like to see happen?

This Fall, we'll be running the Library Lab at the MLK library (
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/LibLabs -- volunteers still needed), and I
expect we'll continue working with NARA and the Smithsonian in some
capacity.  We could certainly schedule one or more events centered on these
ongoing initiatives, and/or something new.

Ideas? Thoughts?

Cheers,
Katie

DC Meetup #22 will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2011 at 1pm at the
Martin Luther King Jr. DC Public Library <http://dclibrary.org/mlk>, in our
Library Lab space.

The meetup will be an opportunity for us to brainstorm and discuss outreach
and project ideas that the Wiki Society of Washington, DC (soon-to-be
official Wikimedia DC chapter) can help support.  Learn how to get involved
with the chapter and help out.

Here's an update on the LibLab project:

1) The DC LibLab is getting going, recruiting volunteers, including but not
limited to Wiki DC folks.  We're also reaching out to related open
knowledge, tech, GLAM folks, etc. (and can use help spreading the word)

2) Our first event at LibLab is on Saturday, 11 am : we're doing an
OpenStreetMap mapping workshop "party".  The requirements are minimal so
it's a good way to get the space going.  Everyone is welcome to join, no
prior knowledge or GPS required.

3) We have a wiki page: http://wikidc.org/wiki/LibLab where I've been
putting some more concrete ideas on what to do with the LibLab space.

4) We're also setting up a public facing website which will present the
LibLab concept and can help us get the word out (a blog + calendar maybe?)
about what's happening at LibLab DC.  The site will be at librarylab.org

In all, the space is pretty awesome... it's very visible from the street, a
great opportunity to help make the library a cool, fun, educational place,
do GLAM outreach + local outreach and reach diverse populations.  We can run
any number of wikipedia-related events and workshops over the months ahead.

The head of the DCPL is very supportive, and if the space is successful,
some elements could be made permanent (after renovations of the space in
January).

We still need more people to help out and help spread the word.

Cheers,
Katie

The site's up now and looking just splendid.  Many thanks to Nate and
Noll&Tam for the web and design work.  Now we just need a way for
people to sign up as fans of the site -- a FB like button?  :-)

Web coding request: A calendar to see / schedule events is definitely
needed.  Can someone on the list help us set one up?

Also: I've attached a favicon.  We should add one; this isn't perfect
(a full 2px white border would be better) but may be ok as a stopgap.

Sam.
