Open Library already does book citations automatically, though they aren't in the ideal. For example, if I wanted the citation for http://openlibrary.org/books/OL24172667M/The_works_of_Edmund_Spenser I can click on the link for Wikipedia Citation in the bottom right and it gives me:

{{Citation |publisher = G. Routledge |publication-place = London |title = The works of Edmund Spenser |url = http://openlibrary.org/books/OL24172667M/The_works_of_Edmund_Spenser |author = Edmund Spenser |publication-date = 1869 |oclc = 9253964 }}

I think that is what you are interested in and we already have a vast vast number of books in Open Library,

Alex

Hello all,

Here's a big opportunity heading our direction: Open source book
metadata, possibly from OCLC.

What will happen when open source data about books meets up with the
Wikipedia format: a flexible way for anybody to link different
material to a book or author: article text, summaries, categories,
subjects, keywords, links to registries of people, places, things ...
?

Immediate practical impact: easy input of book references is a big key
to clearing up WP "no reliable source" problems.
But there's more possibility ...

Here's some background on the major players, to plant a seed with you

Open data’s role in transforming our bibliographic framework

How do we get OCLC to release its data? Any ideas?

Cheers!
