Checking the schedule for Amtrak Cascades & Coast Starlight routes though,
it looks like there's not a southbound evening or night train after the
6:05pm departure from Seattle, which won't work well for a 6pm-8pm meetup.

I'll probably rent a car for the day; sounds like I can avoid peak traffic
times if I arrive early and do a little sightseeing in the afternoon.

Carwise, Seattle has a real traffic problem around rush hours. The
buses at
least get to use HOV lanes & dedicated lanes
when available.
