Collaboring with OpenStreetMap in *any* capacity is probably a win for us.
Would you like to reach out to them and check about opportunities for
collaboration? At the least, we might be able to talk about mapping and GIS
on Wikipedia.
In the longer term, I am hoping that we can develop some ongoing
collaboration with groups like OSM.
I have heard a number of people interested in having WikiConferece USA here
in 2016 or 2017. If you'd like to take the lead on exploring how that would
work, please do. It will be awhile before we make commitments but
exploratory work now would be most welcome. I have some questions of my own
about conferences in general that I'll probably discuss with WMF also.

Cascadia Wikimedians,

Portland. If any of us are so inclined, perhaps assisting for this bid for
the 2015 OpenStreetMap SOTM-US conference, & then the subsequent
preparation should the bid succeed, would help prepare us in our efforts
to bring WikiConference USA to Cascadia.

Subject: [opensource-107] Bid to host the 2015 State Of The Map-US
Conference
To: opensource-107-announce(a)meetup.com
We are going to prepare a bid to host the 2015 OpenStreetMap SOTM-US
conference here. The request for bids will be made by the US chapter in
late September and due by mid November. Everyone's help will be needed to
craft a winning bid. I've only attended two SOTM-US conferences, but really
enjoyed both. The conference runs two days over a weekend, plus usually a
code sprint day and another day for workshops. The cost for last years
conference in San Francisco was only around $80 so much more affordable.
And they have the usual scholarships.
They have tentatively plan to hold the conference Mid April. For us the
weather is a concern. On the bright side (like that ever happens in April)
costs should be better. I believe we can make a case for holding it in the
summer, but I'd like to hear everyone thoughts.
As the local host we are responsible for:
- initial bid
- identifying venues
- building an initial budget
- getting deals with hotels & caterers
- finding party locations for social events
- The bulk of practical preparation and organizing on the ground;
volunteers, venue, and social events
We are not responsible for fundraising, program, sponsors, registration,
PR, video recording or website.
If there are areas we think the Chapter should handle we can push back. As
and old friend said, this is all cast in jello.
By now you are probably wondering what a winning bid looks like. Take a
look at Portland for 2012
<https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/State_Of_The_Map_U.S._2012/BIDS/Portland>.
Looking
at Portland Bid, here are the areas we can divide up to tackle the bid as a
group.
- Good writers to craft the wiki
- Describe the city
- OpenStreetMap and Open Source GIS in Seattle
- Entertainment/tourist activities
- Organizing Team
- Venue
- Travel Costs
- Public Transportation in Seattle (Can we get a deal from Car2Go?)
- Budget
What I'm looking for from you to let me know which area you'd like to work
on. Some of you might be going to FOSS4G in Portland (I'm so jealous)
hopefully you'll have a chance to talk to the organizers to get a feel for
what we should be doing to make a successful conference.
Thanks,
Clifford
