I'll take care of the hangout. My understanding is
that Hangout has better
security than Skype does, so I use Hangout whenever possible.
Also, Skype also doesn't have any multi-party video chat support for
GNU/Linux (although multi-party voice works just fine).
I use
http://chatb.org/ which is the most freedom compatible in the
sense that it doesn't require proprietary software and is full
free/open source but it both requires a rather new version of Chrome
or Firefox and doesn't work on at all on certain locked-down networks.
