Would WMF actually want this in their infrastructure? We would be talking about a US-registered organization with US servers hosting material which is copyrighted in the US - and by definition, all these materials could not be used on any existing WMF projects, no? I thought it was all those reasons which made this an idea for a separate WMC project.

Anyways, I'll send out a foundation/commons email shortly.

1. Is anybody interested in contributing to this kind of project, or should I just stick to doing it by myself (probably on Flickr)?

I think it's an interesting project, and I'm sure others can see the benefits. That said...

2. Would anyone object to my launching a private wiki on the grounds that this could eventually be done by WMC in a more official fashion?

My feeling here is that the WMF should be involved, as we would really want to integrate this into their infrastructure, from both a user and a maintenance point of view. WM Canada would probably be involved in some way, although since it's still in the starting up stage, it's hard to say what exactly that could be.

I'd definitely solicit input from the Commons crowd, but also touch base with WMF staff, to see if it's something that makes sense.

Gerald.
