Hi everyone,
First of all, I'd like to extend my congratulations to Wikimedia Hong Kong for their successful Wikimania 2013 bid. Looks like we'll be flooding Wikimania next year. :P
Secondly, I'm writing this e-mail to see whether or not it will be possible for us to organize an Asian Wikimedia conference sometime in the future, either next year or in 2014. I think it would be good for us if we can organize a regional conference, especially with the wave of regional conferences being organized: WikiBilim organized the Turkic Wikimedia Conference for Central Asia last month, and Iberocoop is organizing the Ibero-American Wikimedia Summit this year in Santiago, Chile. Maybe we can do the same? What do you guys think?
Regards,
Josh

Hi Josh, I for one is not a fan of conferences, specially if the aim is somewhat loss (not focused). I helped AU and AR for wikiwomen conference this year with international attendees of 9-12 women (including myself and Kartika), and I am happy that this is a focused conference where sharing is focused to problem solving.
I was warned by the Russian attendees during interview, and she said: "If this conference is not focused and you girls are talking about wikipetan, I'm not coming!"
I was laughing and agreeing with her. I assure her that I'm would like to discuss project, an indepth, workable, technical up to details project discussions, and both of us end the interview happy and excited.
I'm against having conference for the sake of having conference. I don't know whether any of you know or not, WMAU is planning to organize a language conference this year in Bali. This means, any of yous with language focused area are invited, and any of yous whose focused are not in language area is NOT invited.
WMID also planning an advocacy for Indonesia focused fundraising with the government, this involved inviting Wikimedia Estonia's Raul Veede as a speaker for being able to drag their tax department to the court and win by having WMES as tax deduction non profit organization. This mean having seminar about this focused area.
Jeromy, I see you owe John a BIG CUP OF COFEE for supporting you.

And about the conference, I cannot feel we have solid ground to have an Asian Conference at this moment
of course we can also keep communicating and if we really find some agenda or project that require us come to meet together to deal with stuff, we are willing to support or even facilitate it in the future :)

I think focused and generally smaller events are helpful, but at the same time I would not underestimate the value of having a large general conference (even though that would require a lot more effort).
This year, we could consider the possibility of asking the winning HKG team to have an Asia-focused conference, and better yet, if there is another chapter that might be interested in organizing a conference with focused region-specific programming.

I would have to agree with Anirudh's e-mail. While it does take more effort, if we're going to be consolidating Asia's place in the movement, I think we have to start moving forward on consolidating and capitalizing on our strengths here.
We can start with small events and move to bigger ones later on: for example, Wikimedia Philippines has on the pipeline (not finalized yet, but working on it) a GLAMcamp for 2013 which, if I remember correctly, will be open to participants from other Asian countries. We can also have a track (or a group of sessions) on Wikimedia in Asia for Wikimania next year, like how there was a similar arrangement for Wikimedia in the Middle East last year in Haifa.
I understand that we're all at varying stages of growth and development right now, and we all have differing priorities as to how we should approach the movement's fulfillment in our respective countries, but I think having common multilateral (not bilateral) projects would be beneficial for the movement, and for all of us, as a whole.

Hello HK Team,
In behalf of WMPH team, we congratulate the WMHK for winning the bid. My posting (Exec8) went just in time they are about to announce the winner.
We hope that we could get the biggest attendance of Filipinos in this conference.
As per the the Asian Conference setup, maybe we could have it setup simultaneous to the hacking days. Probably a Mini-Conference for starters. Maybe we could be guided by established regional groups on how they started to bond together.
