I was in DC, but I suppose that means that although I have lived in Thailand for
the past 14 years, I don't count?
There is more to Thailand than just Bangkok.
It takes me nearly 6 hours to get to the main airport at Suvarnaphum' and that
INCLUDES a domestic flight for part of the journey. From here to Manila and back would
cost me around £360, and that's more than I'm prepared to pay for the pleasure of
volunteering thousands of editing hours., especially as I will probably also have to fund
my own journey to expensive HK next year.
But we're still forgetting the cost for all these people in the developing/emerging
nations in SE Asiawhere the salaries and cost of living are only a fraction of Western
salaries, until they have to pay for air fares that are are the same the world over - one
medium hop from Thailand to Manila could be the equivalent of several months salary for a
grade school teacher.
Rather than chapters having to organise a series of mini Wikimanias, shouldn't we be
looking at finally getting some realistic funding from the Foundation for scholarships for
the main annual event?

Siska started a page on Meta last year:

basis.

Dear Wikimedians,
Greetings from India
.
It is great to see lot of discussion around an Asia meetup.
Should we have our conversations in a focused manner on a meta page?
So far the conversations seem to veer around:
When
Where
Funding
Australia and Asia
Are we looking at a small gathering like the chapters meeting in Germany or a larger
group of wikimedians from the region?
Should we start a page at
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Asiapac_Meeting and
start by defining its goal and objectives?
We should do as an annual event in APAC.
In my view the need is compelling.

Anywhere else, especially the Philippines, would
be far too far away even for me here in Thailand.
Manila is 1,361 miles from Bangkok. Jakarta is even farther, at 1,420 miles. As I was
recently in Thailand, I can easily say that the Philippines is not as far as you claim it
is.
(On the other hand, it would beneficial if we had a more central location. Based on my
calculations, the most central location is Vietnam. But economically, the cost of having
a meeting in the Philippines, or even Indonesia, offsets the distance, as it would be
cheaper to hold a meeting there than in Singapore or Malaysia.)
Currently the effort is on creating a Thai
work group, if not immediately a chapter, in order to secure scholarships for Thai
editors to go to 'fairly' nearby Wikimania in Hong Kong next year.
If it helps, Wikimedia Philippines contemplated establishing a fund to disburse
scholarships to Wikimania for both Filipino and Southeast Asian Wikipedians in the past.
It's allocated as part of our proposed budget for 2013, and should it push through
we'll inform people in due time. (But don't keep your hopes up though.)
ASAIK, Thai Wikipedians were not present in
Washinton.
I believe the only Southeast Asians at Wikimania this year was a Filipino (the treasurer
of Wikimedia Philippines), a Malaysian, and I believe 1-2 Vietnamese people. Please
correct me if I'm wrong.
If we are to consider though the general definition of what this mailing list is for
(which is for everyone in Asia, from Turkey to Australia and Russia to Indonesia), there
were quite a number of Asian people there: this was evidenced at the number of people who
attended the Wikimedia Asia lunch at Wikimania.
