Those events are currently called the Dutch Wikimedia Conference and
(in Chinese) the Chinese Wikimedia Conference, which seems fine to me.
But all big international groups do something this -- with national
and regional meetings. There's no way to get all 100,000 contributors
together in one place (just imagine... :-)
O'Reilly's Foo Camp and Bar Camps are a good example. Only a few
hundred people can fit into / make it to Foo Camp, which is the big
event, so there are Bar Camps in various locations, at various times,
for everyone else.
