Commons is ok for some pictures, but just remember Commons has a project scope and funny pictures about the venue might not be very *educational*.
That said I'm ashamed as a Commons evangelist not to have been the one to create the category on our awesome Wikimedia Commons!

Wikimedia Commons is OK for pictures of the events. But I agree with you for a Flickr group : perhaps some people don't mind but *I* don't want pictures including myself to be under a free license, so you can't put all the pictures taken in Wikimania on Wikimedia Commons.
