Hi all,
I am a first time organiser of Wiki Loves Monument at Wikimedia Polska and I have two questions. I was wondering if anyone had any experiences that they could share about:
1. Treating drone photography as a separate category. We're thinking of making photos taken by a drone into a separate category but I'm not sure how to deal with it in a fair way. Can the photos be considered in a separate category completely (and not eligible for the main category - not very fair for the drone photos) or would they be considered in two categories, main selection AND separate categorie, so potentially eligible for two prizes and not very fair for everyone else?
2. The use of AI in photos - have you added any mentions of AI to your regulations and if so, where do you draw the line? For example, enhancing with AI tools is OK but not generating photos with AI completely? And so on.
I welcome any tips or experiences you might have and wish to share!
Thanks, with best wishes, Kasia

Hi Katarzyna
I have been considering similar issues as I oranize in Switzerland photo competitions but I have in charge too innovation programme.
About drones it makes sense mainly because today is not easy like in the past to fly a drone as the driver sould have some licenses or permissions and, in this case, there are different regulations to check (https://www.easa.europa.eu/en/the-agency/faqs/drones-uas).
About AI you are right. Important to check the origin of the original picture. Modifying with AI means that the work is a derivative work mainly of an open licensed picture while generating from scratch opens a lot of questions about the copyright. The best would be to upload the original picture in Commons and to upload that generated with AI (using the correct tag https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:AI-generated_media) indicating the original as source.
Kind regards

hello, Kasia!
your question prompted our own conversation locally :) we kind of have not thought about it before...
so, our own rules in the WLM Ukraine have two important provisions, though not specific to AI (rules.wlm.photo):
5.1. Фотографії повинні бути виконані Конкурсантами особисто / Photos Photos must not be excessively processed (adding, removing or moving objects; "artistic blur", collages, etc.)should be self-taken by Contestants (...) 5.7. Світлини не мають бути надмірно обробленими (додавання, видалення чи переміщення об'єктів; «художнє розмиття», колажі тощо) / Photos must not be excessively processed (adding, removing or moving objects; "artistic blur", collages, etc.)
ideally they would allow us even now to disqualify any "generated photo by AI", as it would not be "reflecting reality", while allowing us to accept pictures "moderately enhanced by AI powered tools" if the end product is useful for illustrating Wikipedia. but we might still add something to the rules just to be on the safe side
now, from what I see, a sister photo contest, Wiki Loves Earth International follows the same logic (Commons:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2024/Rules https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2024/Rules) in FAQs:
*Can I use Photoshop or a similar program to post-process my photos before submitting them? Can I edit photos with AI?* You can use Photoshop or similar editing programs. The photos can be edited or processed using any software. But please avoid the temptation to overprocess.
If the photo is fully AI-generated, it will surely be disqualified. Please try not to upload such images for the contest. You can upload slightly AI-edited images, but do not overprocess them: this is a photographic contest, not a computer art one. WLE Ukraine added a note to their provision about photos being self-taken ( https://ua.wikimedia.org/wiki/%D0%92%D1%96%D0%BA%D1%96_%D0%BB%D1%8E%D0%B1%D0...):
[2] Зокрема на конкурс заборонено подавати зображення, згенеровані інструментами генеративного штучного інтелекту. Для перевірки цієї вимоги оргкомітет залишає за собою право попросити надати оригінал фотографії у форматі RAW у авторів світлин, котрі претендують на перемогу у викладених у пп. 7.1. номінаціях / In particular, it is forbidden to submit images generated by generative artificial intelligence tools to the competition. In order to verify this requirement, the organising committee reserves the right to ask the authors of the photographs to submit the original photo in RAW format for the works participating in categories in 7.1
hope that helps!

The AI question is especially interesting. This is important because you could have some people using AI to 'recreate' historic sites as they may have appeared. I'm a big fan of reconstructions like those of Bob Marshall https://bobmarshall.co.uk/ and think they are fantastic tools for bringing the past to life and helping people imagine how a structure may have appeared - but a good reconstruction involves a talented artist and historical research. Aside from the copyright issues, one generated through AI would likely veer into fantasy. I don't expect that to be common in Wiki Loves Monuments, but it's perhaps worth considering.

Of course there are lots of useful things people can do in documenting heritage, that aren't part of WLM as such.
One of the strengths of WLM is that it's straight forward and that most people can participate. At least currently, AI-generation is neither. Drone photography is harder to prohibit because a drone is fundamentally not that different from a tripod. At this point, the distinction with pure AI-generation is still pretty clear, but i agree that this may not be as clear soon enough. It would be great if people could suggest some language that a) might be appropriate for national competitions, and b) that might be appropriate for the international competition.

Hi all,
I am a first time organiser of Wiki Loves Monument at Wikimedia Polska and I have two questions. I was wondering if anyone had any experiences that they could share about:
- Treating drone photography as a separate category.
- The use of AI in photos - have you added any mentions of AI to your
regulations and if so, where do you draw the line? For example, enhancing with AI tools is OK but not generating photos with AI completely? And so on.
I welcome any tips or experiences you might have and wish to share!
Thanks, with best wishes, Kasia
