Thanks for all the suggestions.
Will work on cutting down the number of images before handing over to a jury. Lots of the images are kinda 'garbage', (i.e images with low resolution, some even mere 50kb etc.)
In 2012, there was a tool used to sort and select images out of a category. I hope a tool of that sort still exists.

Hi, I'm rexford, from ghana.
Late last year, WLA[1] was organized. ghana uploaded some 800 images[2]. We're looking for a jury to select the best 5 images.
Myself can't be a part of jury, same as others on our team, because we took part in the event.
We'll really appreciate if we could get volunteers to help in selecting the best images from this community.
Thanks.

It was in the toolserver, which disappeared ~6 months ago. I can prepare a small dump for you, though. Which category are you interested in? I guess you want the images in full resolution?
Best
Thanks. We'll really love it if you help get it up and running for us.
The category is: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Images_from_Wiki_Loves_Africa_20...
As regards resolution, a 1080x720 will be great. Upon picking the ones interested, we can hunt for their full res later.

It's actually easier to grab the full res one, so unless there are disk space problems I would prefer to grab that.
However, the category in full full resolution seems to be 2.89 GB (3104994343 bytes), which you may consider "too much".

I have enough space, just the connection to transfer onto my space is the issue.
But I think 3 Gig shouldn't be an issue to work with.

Hi, Rexford.
Based on this need, I'm building a downloader tool (as a volunteer; this isn't done in my WMF role) to help create such collections of reduced-resolution (any size you want) images for a given Commons category. It's not quite ready for use, but in the meantime I've created the collection you wanted in the size you specified. It is 157 megabytes in size, and you can download it (in a 7-Zip[1] archive) from here[2].
I hope this helps, and let me know if you run into other issues.

Hello Asaf,
Thanks for getting the zip file of all the files for me. It was really smaller than I expected.
I have gone through the 800+ images and I have selected just a little over 100 images as candidate images to present to the jury.[1]
I wish to hereby add a *disclaimer *(I've cc'ed wikimedia-gh list as well): *The list of selected images I present contains about 10 of images I took and uploaded. I included them, not because I took them, but because I think they are not bad images and as such are worth to be considered candidate images to present. The jury are free to exclude or include them upon reviewing the images.[2]*
The compressed folder of images also contain a .txt file with links to the selected images original files on Commons.
As it stands now, the selected images are ready. I hope we can get a jury to take it from here? And whats more, the list I present is just something *I* feel are good. The jury are free to also go through the 800+ images in case they wish to widen their taste. :p
I think in general, images that came from Ghana aren't that deviating from this year's competition theme.
Thanks

It quite does that, except for the category thing but it would be fairly trivial to add.
Java users may also be interested in Édouard Hue implementation https://github.com/edouardhue/commons-downloader
Thanks, Jean-Frédéric! I did not know about your tool. I did spend some time looking for a tool on Commons, most specifically here[1], but didn't find anything appropriate. It did not occur to me to just grep GitHub, though. :)
Anyhow, my tool is on GitHub too[2], although it's incomplete. The category mode is working fine, but it was originally started (long ago) as a downloader for preparing images for offline Wikipedia editions, based on an article list, and supporting multiple parallel downloaders, and that part is incomplete. I'll get around to finishing that Some Day Soon.
But if anyone wants to use the tool and has questions, I'm happy to help.

About the tool: for 100 pictures, I don't think it's worth to adapt or create tools; even by hand, I think 100 pictures can be processed in one or two hours. I think it's more important to start defining a selection process so the jurors can start right away to work with the images. For example, you may ask each juror to pick 10 images, and then do a new selection round with only these. Or you may ask jurors to assign scores (1-10), and then simply sort the images by score and work with the best ones (or even pick winners immediately).

The selection process, I'll email you about it by tomorrow. The images aren't many, so I think handpicking the best images wouldn't be much of a difficulty.

As it stands now, we've not had Antone show interest in being a part of the jury.
Until the jury is formed, I think you can hold on a bit. We'll get back to you when the jury is ready.

Sorry for being late into this conversaion, but I assume you're referring to the 2012 tool that I wrote, it still exists on Labs and I can set it up for you if it's still relevant. Keep me posted.

Hi Asaf,
Based on this need, I'm building a downloader tool (as a volunteer; > this isn't done in my WMF role) to help create such collections of > reduced-resolution (any size you want) images for a given Commons > category. You might want to check out my CommonsDownloader < https://github.com/Commonists/CommonsDownloader%3E
It quite does that, except for the category thing but it would be fairly trivial to add.

Sure. For convenience, I took this opportunity to push it on Pypi − makes it super easy to install.

Awesome! The more the merrier :)

Ah, I certainly know the feeling ;)

I actually got around to finish that tonight :
``` sudo pip install commonsdownloader download_from_wikimedia_commons --category 'Images_from_Wiki_Loves_Africa_2014_in_Ghana' ```
Hope that helps,
