Hi all!

I'm glad to announce you that, this year, we will have a Wiki Loves
Monuments edition in... Antarctica!

We believe that, to actually make this a global contest, we need to
reach all continents. Antarctica, despite having no permanent
population, has several sites that commemorate the attempts of
exploration and research carried out by the international community
over the past centuries. There are 86 monuments declared by the
Antarctic Treaty System that will participate.

This certainly will be a particular and very symbolic contest. We
expect a very low amount of participants but most of the images will
be unique, so each one will have a lot of impact.

In the past weeks, I have been in contact with the Secretariat of the
Antarctic Treaty and they have accepted to support our contest. We
expect to reach different institutions (researchers, tourist
operators, national institutions, etc.) with the help of the ATS...
but there are still a lot of things to do. In line with the spirit of
the Antarctic Treaty and the Wikimedia Movement, this local contest
will be an international one.

We expect a lot of volunteers of different countries to help us
translating the monuments lists, updating the website, contacting
institutions in their own countries, becoming juries and so on...
Wikimedia Argentina will only participate as a coordinator.

We expect to reach this year to every place in the world... even the
most remote and cold! :)

This is really great.

Are the lists in some language already available, so that the translation can be started?

Just to be on the safe side: Will the lists include monuments in the sector of the Antarctic which Argentina claims but no other country recognized as belonging to Argentina?

Cheers
