Hi everyone,

Mykola and Bodhi, thank you for sharing your opinions.

Looking back to 2020 and 2021, where the option to run in a month other than September was built in for the first time (before that we had occasional requests from national organizers to run in a slightly different period), we saw that about 1/3 of the organizers chose a month other than September. This suggests that a significant number of countries prefer to have some leeway with the timeline. This does mean that the international results come a little later in the annual cycle, but the benefit of offering this flexibility as an option outweighs this disadvantage.
Therefore, like last year, the window for the WLM 2022 will run from September 1 to October 31.

I know some have been waiting for the decision, thanks to you for your patience!

Best,
Ciell

Hi,

On WLM Ukraine side we would really like to organise the contest in October this year.

While we have little hope the war will end by October, we will definitely have more chances to attract participants in the month of October.
Most organisations and institutions are currently planning to return to work by the end of August only (e.g. schools and universities may reopen again in September in some regions, civil servants are gradually returning to their cities and villages over the summer etc.). We would need them way more than in previous years, at least because they know their local situation and we don't.

We would already have an extremely difficult task of organising a context despite the war: we would need way more effort reaching out to potential participants to get a coverage of war-torn areas where taking photos now is simply not safe. 'Just go and take a picture of the nearest monument' does not work during the war (it may result in an arrest), so we cannot just put a banner and wait for photos.

We need a significant effort to make a safe and efficient contest, and neither we nor our partners have enough time to prepare everything by 1 September. It is clearly more realistic by 1 October and we have a plan how we can organise a reasonably good WLM contest by that time.

Thus we would kindly ask you to let WLM Ukraine organise our context in October this year.

Thanks a lot
Mykola (NickK)

Hi,

I think we should resume our earlier WLM timeline to be organized only in the month of September. The COVID-19 crisis is almost over and there is no need to extend it to October unlike last couple of years.

Like Željko, I am also interested to know about the current stand of WLM international team to allow organizing sub-national competition. I know that previously back in 2018 there was a big no about this but may be it has changed now.

Regards,
Bodhisattwa

Hi Željko,

I hear your question, and understand you have asked for details about this before.
The international team will be in touch with you off-list, to hear more about your ideas on the subject.

Am I correct that everyone on this list is okay with WLM 2022 to run between Sept 1st - Oct 31st?
Just want to make sure. 🙂

Best,
Ciell

Hi everyone,

I know that some of you are already very enthusiastically working on organising WLM 2022, and so is the international team!

The WMF granted our request for Wiki Loves Monuments 2022-2023 so we are good to go for another year, and we are very happy that this year Manfred Werner will actively be supporting the international team as our part-time staff. Manfred was previously already involved in our finances and is a staff member of Wikimedia Austria, our fiscal sponsor. Welcome Manfred!

In our last bi-weekly meeting, the international team reviewed the timeline of WLM 2022, and we would like to ask you to do the same. Historically, we organised WLM in September, but in 2020, because of the pandemic, the competition period was extended to 3 months (Sept, Oct, Nov).
Last year, the two months in which you can choose any period up to a maximum of 31 days for your national competition, was September 1st - October 31st. Would this be okay to do again this year?
And the deadline of December 5th for the submission to the international jury (sending your national top 10 to the international team), was this a reasonable time frame?

Best,
Ciell

Are there any updates in regards to regional (sub-and-supra+national) competitions?
