Thanks to Saqib and Lodewijk for quick responses that clear up many doubts.
FYI:
1. As soon as WMF approves our funding for WLM-TH, we will launch our
PR campaign. We expect this in early August. Thanks to you guys, we
now know what to write and not to write in the campaign.
2. WLM-TH has its own internal survey since 2013. We probably conduct
it again this year at the conclusion of the event. We expect to
conclude it early and move on to consider our position for WLM-TH 2015
or similar events e.g. WLE. Last year, we had our survey ready to
deploy but waited for the international survey. Now, it is clear that
we can go ahead without waiting.

Hi,
some in-line responses.

Hi All,
It is less than two months from September where we will open upload
for participants. There are still ambiguities about the fate of the
international team and the tasks that the team used to work on. We
need to make a decision on this and move on quickly. It is difficult
to do a press release or talk to a new partner if we are uncertain
about our own internal process.
I believe that having an international team and international prizes
can add a lot of value to the competition. The costs/resources may be
drawn/collected from the participating national competitions. However,
after two weeks with no response to the proposal, I now assume that no
one else is interested in pursuing the idea.
Here are five areas that we have to think about...
1. The international website:
http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org and
the sub-domains
xx.wikilovesmonuments.org
Who is in charge of this? What will we do about it? Last year, we
advertised the URL
th.wikilovesmonuments.org for participants to
access our site. I suspect that we can't do it anymore. On top of
that if the information is outdated, it would confuse participants
when we launch our campaign. Many people just google WLM and click on
the first page that shows up.

This has the implication that I will alter the website sometime soon to
reflect this intention. I will remove the links to the national
competitions from the sidebar to avoid outdated information. I will link
to
the commons page for more information about national competitions that
may
or may not happen in 2014.

Still recruiting for the team?

The number of participating countries is 22. The map hasn't been
updated for a while.
3. General coordination on critical tools:
* Central notice
* Upload wizard
We wish that both of them are working the same way as last year.

Romaine is mostly making sure everybody has access to the
upload forms and centralnotice - which is of critical importance too.
4. Marketing pitch/target group:
* We use to lean on the popularity of the world record and the total
sum of international prizes. Can we still point out to the fact that
WLM has attained the world record in 2012?
I think using that as a marketing tool would be misleading - there is no way
that 2014 attempts will break the 2013 record (which still needs to be
recognized btw). But technically, you could refer to it. I would strongly
urge not to emphasize it too prominently though, as it will be mostly
disappointing afterwards and thus damaging for future attempts.
* Can we still use the WLM logo in certificates, trophies and other
materials as usual?
Sure.
* Do we need to produce a bilingual website for a national
competition? Do we have to participate in non-core activities like
the central survey after the competition?
The survey will be a requirement for most grant-funded contests anyway - if
one country sets it up, it is only a little extra effort (some translating
and coordinating) to enable it for all countries. But you may need some
international coordination here - especially with respect to timing.
* Assuming we have no international prizes this year but we have it
next year, should we include finalists from this year into
consideration of the next year prizes?
No, it is impossible to promise even that there will be an international
competition next year (although much more likely). But also, if you include
even a single contribution of 2014 in the 2015 competition, any chance to
break the world record will become zero. It is a hard requirement that the
whole competition has to happen within a scope of three months - even if
every country only uses one.
5. Central contact point:
* We seem to have this mailing list as the only channel for all
communication. Is this correct?
Best,
Taweethaも

Hi All,
I understand that Lodewijk has his expectation for the international
team. People from the previous years have set the standard to be very
high.
Having said that we need to focus on the present. Many countries are
organizing WLM. What value can we add to their competition if we have
an international team? What will be the cost associated with the
activities?
My opinion is that the minimal core tasks are:
1. Find an acceptable judging methods (including juries) to rank the
first 10 photos out of [number of countries] x 10. Make sure that
participating countries abide by the judging rules.
2. Procure and distribute awards.
3. (Not compulsory) Do some PR for WLM at the international level.
Collect statistics. Help countries that may have technical/financial
difficulty.
I believe that it is doable by the countries participate in WLM 2014.
You may ask for volunteers, you may ask for one representative from
each country or you organize an election if too many people want to
involve. But this has to be done now and conclude quickly...
What do you guys think?
