From my experience as both a judge and a shortlister in WLM for the last 3 years, the ideal number to give to the jury is between 200 and 300. It should be very easy to get down to that number from 800, if you remove the images with technical problems (resolution too low, watermark, bad focus, extremely poor lighting, incorrect subject, etc.), you should be able to reduce it to 200–300 in half an hour or so.
