Both Flickr and 500px are commercial companies which are supportive of CC-licensing photographs, so I think offering subscriptions or upgrades to these services would be reasonable. Others without active support for CC licensing would be less popular.
In the past we did for example receive a lot of criticism when using Apple products or courses for non-open source software. I could for example imagine offering a license on PhotoShop Pro, but I suspect that would cause some criticism - even though it would possibly be useful to the photographers.Lodewijk2013/7/28 Jan Ainali <jan.ainali@wikimedia.se>
I am not sure what would clash, but some obvious options are upgrades on Ubuntu One, Flickr or Dropbox.Do you have any examples on services that would clash with an open spirit community?2013/7/28 Lodewijk <lodewijk@effeietsanders.org>Do you have specific suggestions of those that don't clash too much with the open spirit community and are specifically handy to photographers?Lodewijk
2013/7/28 Jan Ainali <jan.ainali@wikimedia.se>How about prizes like online backup? Some of the pro-alternatives are quite expensive. They would be very easy to pay for though and give someone access to. Actually not only backup, but all sorts of online services could be used.2013/7/28 Lodewijk <lodewijk@effeietsanders.org>Hi Karthik, thanks for sharing!I am strongly of the opinion that we should be able to do better than vouchers (as we discussed). With so many national teams having experience with prizes, I hope we will be able to come up with something better. The way monetary prizes are being received in different countries varies widely. Sometimes people expect just that, and they will use the money they get as prize to invest in their photography. That sounds totally fine, and that is also why a voucher system might be acceptable. However, putting an amount on a prize sounds so... simplistic. It feels a little like paying someone to make a photo - to make a contribution. Awarding something useful directly, feels better to me. As an example, in 2011 we were able to offer a few other prizes, such as a night in an art hotel in St. Petersburg and a tour flight off the most western point of Europe in Portugal. Both are however quite local and impossible to accept for someone living at a great distance without funds to travel there. So what alternative prizes could there be, that are fairly location independent (at least serve a number of countries in the neighborhood), and have a similar value as suggested by Karthik? It is not bad to have a few continent-dependent prizes I guess, as long as there's a good distribution (because of the principle 'first prize winner gets first pick - he can choose the third prize too, if he likes).Any input welcomed!Lodewijk2013/7/27 Karthik Nadar <karthikndr@wikimedia.in>
_______________________________________________Correction!!Dear monument clickers,
the WLM international team has drafted prizes for the international and will be happy to re- work if anyone has any suggestions! So far, we have been buying vouchers for the Prize winners which didn’t work well previous year as the contest went global. We had to take help from Chapters and Individuals to buy vouchers for the winners, and then reimburse them from the international budget. That was very time consuming at most of the ends.
We would welcome if you got any suggestions. If you would agree that giving out vouchers is the best process and we should continue that, do also let us know that.
The (draft) prizes for the 2013 contest will be as follows:
