Hi Yaroslav,

there are many things not ready yet :) So yes, there are multiple issues. The issue I'm most worried about, assuming all data could be inserted into wikidata already (big assumption as far as I understand, but OK), that the data could still not be displayed on the Wikipedias. As in, replace the current lists on Wikipedia. As long as that is the case, and we do transfer the data (or rather copy), it would become necessary to edit two places as soon as you make an improvement to (for example) the address. You would have to correct both Wikipedia (the list of monuments in XYZ) and Wikidata (Q1234567). If we wait until this display option is available on all wiki's, this is no longer the case.

So this is mostly a timing argument - I do agree that eventually moving to Wikidata makes sense. But as it looks right now to me, that'll take a bit more time.

there is no possibility yet to display them on Wikipedia directly from
Wikidata. Because that would basically mean that if you want to make
an improvement, you would have to do so on two places: on wikipedia,
and in wikidata.

Also, I understood Wikidata can't handle all the data types yet that we need.

Hi Lodewijk,

actually, there are two separate issues.

Wikidata can not handle the list property yet, indeed. My point is that we can actually make the lists without transferring them as lists, but by transferring individual properties and reading them in Wikipedia via lua templates (which is already possible). On Wikipedia, one can then combine the templates into lists, pretty much in the same way it is done now. A great advantage would be a great facilitation of translations (one would only need to translate the names, the data is already there) and of improvement (one picture added would show up in all lists at the same time).

For lists like World Heritage this can be done now, since all entries from the lists are notable and have their Wikidata entries.

For lists like Rijksmonumenten all the entries are notable, but some do not have Wikipedia articles and are unlikely to have them in the future. Thus, they are in principle notable for Wikidata, but some care needs to be exercised since some Wikidata users have tendency to nominate items without Wikipedia/Wikivoyage links for deletion. This can be overcome (for example, individual Commons categories is one way to go), but requires some brainstorming on Wikidata.

Individual Wikipedia/Wikivoyage projects can of course decide for themselves whether they want to use this option or continue for the time being with the "traditional" lists.

Cheers
Yaroslav

PS And I believe we would be in a better shape to discuss this when WLM-2014 has been completed in a month and we all have our hands free.
