Thanks for the announcement Osmar, I'm very glad this came through!

Just for clarification, as Karthik gave links to multiple categories, only http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historic_Sites_and_Monuments_in_Antarctica is participating, and not the ASMA's and ASPA's. We did discuss letting those join as well, but in the end decided against it because it makes communication more consistent and clear.

I hope this will result in some nice pictures!

Hi!
As Khartik pointed out, there are already some lists available in English, Spanish, French and Norwegian... we just need one in Russian and we will have available the four official languages of the Antarctic Treaty.
All of them cover the 86 monuments declared by the Antarctic Treaty System. The monuments are proposed by one or more countries and mantained by them or others, so they are not related directly to any territorial claim. You can see a monument proposed and maintained by India, for example, and some proposed jointly by Argentina and the UK.
There are, in any case, three national monuments of Argentina and one of Chile that are located in Antarctica. Those will participate in their own national contests. When they are and Antarctic and a national monument, I see no problems with the pictures participating in both contests.

Hi all!

I'm glad to announce you that, this year, we will have a Wiki Loves
Monuments edition in... Antarctica!

We believe that, to actually make this a global contest, we need to
reach all continents. Antarctica, despite having no permanent
population, has several sites that commemorate the attempts of
exploration and research carried out by the international community
over the past centuries. There are 86 monuments declared by the
Antarctic Treaty System that will participate.

This certainly will be a particular and very symbolic contest. We
expect a very low amount of participants but most of the images will
be unique, so each one will have a lot of impact.

In the past weeks, I have been in contact with the Secretariat of the
Antarctic Treaty and they have accepted to support our contest. We
expect to reach different institutions (researchers, tourist
operators, national institutions, etc.) with the help of the ATS...
but there are still a lot of things to do. In line with the spirit of
the Antarctic Treaty and the Wikimedia Movement, this local contest
will be an international one.

We expect a lot of volunteers of different countries to help us
translating the monuments lists, updating the website, contacting
institutions in their own countries, becoming juries and so on...
Wikimedia Argentina will only participate as a coordinator.

Do you want to join the WLM-AQ team? Send an e-mail to correo@wikimedia.org.ar!
Also, you can take a look at our page in Commons:

We expect to reach this year to every place in the world... even the
most remote and cold! :)

This is really great.

Are the lists in some language already available, so that the translation can be started?

Just to be on the safe side: Will the lists include monuments in the sector of the Antarctic which Argentina claims but no other country recognized as belonging to Argentina?

Cheers
Yaroslav
