Dear all, a doubt: is Instagram compatible with Creative Commons? Can I upload *my* Instagram pics on Commons (so could it be used for WLM)? Please consider that I'm not suggesting Instagram pics are good for WLM (they are filtered and all, probably not very suitable for illustrating monuments on Wikipedia) but is a legal matter. Aubrey

Need some French help

Hi everyone, I'm working on the monuments database and I ran into some problems for France. I have 43608 items in the database of which 11752 items have as municipality 'non'. This is caused by the variable "commune" which is both in the row as in the header template. Could someone please change this at https://fr.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Mod%C3%A8le:En-t%C3%AAte_de_tabl… to French equivalent of "hide_municipality"? I can have my bot rename the variable, that's pretty straightforward. That will clear the way for the next step. For easy navigation in the mobile app we are including local information for sources. This was already done for a lot of countries, but not for France yet. If it's setup you can browse: France -> Midi-Pyrénées -> Haute-Garonne -> Toulouse (I left out the arrondissement step). For this to work we need to include some information in the header templates. This is not shown to the user, just used for this navigation. For the top levels we use ISO 3166 codes, for France that is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_3166-2:FR . For https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_des_monuments_historiques_de_Toulouse this would be something like: {{En-tête de tableau MH|région_iso=fr-n|département_iso=fr-31|commune=[[Toulouse]]}} Are région_iso and département_iso good names or should it be something different? Who wants to help to get this working for France? Maarten

Hi everyone, because we'd like to monitor stats for all wlm websites globally this year i've installed the open source Piwik package. There were some concerns about using Google Analytics because of privacy issues. The nice thing is: you only need to add a small snippet to your site, i'll add an account for you and you don't need to install any stuff yourself. WLM in Portugal.

Dear all, As you may know, Wikimedia Portugal (WMPT) took part in WLM in 2011. A team of four ended up making a very successful event with very little money! However, early this year, they said they would not be available to continue and organize the 2012 edition of WLM. By them, João Miguel Vasconcelos and I stepped forward. However, we clearly underestimated the workload involved, as well as the time we both could dedicate to this undertaking. Furthermore, unlike last year, WMPT community seems much less enthusiastic about WLM. So, we discussed the matter internally, and have decided not to hold WLM 2012 in Portugal. Community voting and jury process.

Hi all, Per Lodewijk's suggestion, I'm bringing this to the larger list. WLM-US organizers have been discussing the value of setting up a community voting process on-wiki for the initial selection of the top 500 or so photos in the WLM-US pool, which we will then send to the judges (though we're thinking it would be wise to have the judges also surface photos they like that don't make the top 500). Can anyone on this list (particularly Russian organizers) give us feedback on what works well and what does not work well? Did you reach out to Commons contributors who had helped with any of the Featured Picture selection or Picture of the Year voting for feedback? A few of those people we've identified live in the U.S., so we're going to reach out to the relevant individuals. We've also been discussing how to incorporate the WikiProject on English WP that deals with our monuments (WP:NRHP) to try to get help from them. We're thinking of it as a group of ambassadors or captains who can help us alleviate some of the challenge for the jury of sorting thousands of photos. Hi all, it is almost August, that means it is time to get the banners ready! :) For this, we need your help and input. On http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012/Central… you can find a detailed description on how we plan to move forward. There may be some technical changes, but we will still need the translations in all relevant languages of the banner, and the link to the regular landing page. You can provide that on that page. Please put your information on the talkpage or in an email in this thread if you don't know how to edit a wikitable. Also, we need like last year for every country a one page description page in English (if your regular website doesn't happen to be in English). An example is http://www.wikilovesmonuments.nl/english (maybe with a little less detail). We need this in case that there are foreigners living in your country who want to participate, or tourists who visited your country. We want to link to that English page from our main wikilovesmonuments.orgwebsite and we ask you to link from it from your landing page with a clear icon or something (i.e. a British flag with the word 'English'). Hi Barbara and Lodewijk, We had a question from a recent WLM-US meeting about prize sponsors. If we reach out to a place like Canon or Nikon in the U.S., and they agree to sponsor, can we list them with logo on the international site? I'm trying to figure out what kind of incentive we can offer the prize sponsors that would give them a reason to provide good prizes, but I wanted to check with you the protocol for that. If a marketing/events person asks, "What kind of visibility will we get in return," obviously the international site would be the biggest, I would think. I'm not sure how much traffic wikilovesmonuments.us will get. Ideas wanted: Our lists have become too big

Hi, A few days ago I've introduced direct upload links for all the monuments without an image in the monument list. The link worked ok, but I've noticed that the 3 biggest counties (by number of monuments) were not displayed completely anymore due to the page becoming larger than the maximum allowed article size [1]. I reverted the direct upload link, but the problem remained for Iași [2]. Since the problem is only going to get worse as the lists get more complete, I am now wondering what my options are: - ask the WMF for an increase in wgMaxArticleSize in ro.wp. Tempting, but even if this happens before September, >2MB pages will still be hard to load on older computers. - use a short URL service to shave some characters off the URL used for error reporting/image uploading. Might still hit the limit at some point - give up on the error reporting and/or direct image uploading (either in all the counties or just in the ones where we hit the size limit). This sounds like a hard price to pay, since we've received an impressive number of error reports and I'm sure the direct upload link will also be a success. - further split the county list into several smaller pages. As you can see, the list is already split into sections by letter, but putting the sections in different pages would mean between 20 and 30 links, which I believe could discourage people looking for a certain monument. I am not sure which of these options to choose and I am hoping for some advice from you guys. WLM merchandise

FoP and monuments

Hi all, In Washington DC after Wikimania, I went on a monument photo walk and was very happy with some of the photos I took of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnam_Veterans_Memorial>wall. Then I started looking at the FoP rules in the U.S. and realized I don't think I can upload most of those photos to Commons, given the wall is likely considered a statue and is therefore under copyright. Several questions: 1. Is this accurate? Should I consider the photos as inadmissible? 2. Does anyone have experience in other countries with monuments that are on the list but are still under copyright? Will we need to be clear that some of the sites on the Register in the U.S. are not eligible for the contest? 3. How does the primary photo<http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:TouchWall.jpg>on the EnWP article qualify to be hosted on Commons? Is there a percentage of a photo that can still contain a copyrighted monument and be acceptable for upload to Commons? Or is it a resolution issue? It seems there are various photos of the wall that are on Commons that similarly display the wall without copyright notices or templates, like this one<http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Vietnam_Veterans_with_Washington_Mon…> . Dear all, Regarding Matthew's question on Freedom of Panorama and copyright of statues, Katie's answer is correct and pretty much complete. One of the main reasons that we've pretty much limited WLM-US to NRHP sites is that statues can have copyright problems. The NRHP lists are maybe 5% statues, essentially all published before 1978, and I've never seen a copyright problem with one. The Wall, Korean War Memorial and a few similar mall memorials are not on the list. To photograph pre-1978 statues in the US please do the following song and dance: Check with the SIRIS (Smithsonian) site or NRHP data to get the date it was unveiled to the public (date of publication) - all you need to do is show the date is pre-1978. When you photograph the statue, get close up and walk around it, looking for a visible copyright notice. If you can't see a copyright notice, then it's not visible :-) and you are free to upload it to Commons. Can we trust absolute newbies to take this song and dance seriously? (Yes, I sing and dance all the time) I don't think the newbies would take it as deadly serious as some folks at Commons do it. That's the main reason Public Art is not on this year's WLM-US agenda. It's also a good example of how copyright paranoia effects Commons. To tell you the truth, I don't think that pre-WWII sculptors understood copyright in the same way we do now. Almost no sculptures from that period have copyright notices, and I believe when they do they were referring to bronze or stone copies, rather than photographic copies. So Remington's 1910-copyrighted statue is one of the most photographed statues in Philadelphia, and has been since 1910! Buildings, boats, railway locomotives, cornfields, big rocks, breakwaters and other NRHP sites don't have this copyright problem. Wiki Loves Public Art (WLPA) needs your help

Hallo everybody, We have just started working with the Wiki Loves Public Art (WLPA)[1] contest that will focus on getting pictures on sculptures, mosaics, mural paintings, memorials and place specific installments in the public space. If you are interested in public art, enjoy organizing events, think that it is cool and interesting to work with projects that increase cooperation between the Chapters, or would like to work towards GLAM in your country, well then this would be something for you! We are looking for all kinds of volunteers and especially for national coordinators that can help us get things going in the countries and coordinate the volunteer efforts! As we don't want to intrude upon the fantastic Wiki Loves Monument contest we are thinking about holding WLPA during the month of May in 2013. However, May will hopefully give us enough time to work on this and provide good enough weather so that the pictures look nice and people think that it is fun to go out and find the art works. We are of course aware of the tricky copyright legislations in different countries but thanks to the fact that this is organized together with Europeana (www.europeana.eu) we have the possibility to use Europeana's team of judicial experts in finding out answers on some of the questions. Dear All, As was previously updated, Israel will participate this year in the WLM competition. We wish to update you with our progress. Our first objective was to try and obtain a list of national monuments. This proved to be much more difficult than originally anticipated. According to Israeli antiquities law, any building or object created or built before 1700 is a protected archeological object. Buildings which were built afterwards were not protected. After the demolishing of the Herzaliya Gymnasium in 1962 [1], and following public protests, the National Council for Preservation of Heritage Sites was created. This body did not have any legal capacity to protect landmarks, and worked at advancing public awareness of national heritage sites. Only in 2011 was legislation passed protecting such landmarks. According to the legislation, the National Council will create lists of protected sites which will approved by the local municipalities in order to come into force. This resulted in local politics being involved, and most of the lists were never approved due to local economic interests. We approached the Council, and requested their co-operation. We have held several meetings with the Council, and eventually convinced them to join us in the project. (One of the difficulties was that the Council itself has an annual photography competition, and the WLM would compete with it.) Upon receiving the blessing of the general manager of the National Council, we discovered that the Council itself does not have the lists of monuments. With the assistance of the Council, and after a week of searching, they were able to locate some of the lists, which are uploaded to the project page on Wikipedia [2]. This will be the first time that the list of national monuments will be available online to the Israeli public. We have also contacted several sponsors, and currently await their decision to sponsor the competition. We have contacted the largest local amateur photography school, and asked it to sponsor some of the events we are planning as part of the competition. Alpha state means that it's far from finished yet, but ready for people to start testing with it. First - you can search for the monument, then you can improve data - by better placing the monument on map, changing address to more up-to-date etc. See how easy it is for contributors in comparison with editing wiki-tables... Toolserver - how to get integrated?

Dear colleges! Just a technical question. I would like to include Ukrainian monuments into the toolserver search. For example, looking for "Жмеринка" (*Żmerynka*) I see this page<http://owlz.org/oar-browser.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Ftoolserver.org%2F%7Eerfgoe…> where I see, that the nearest monuments is in 400+ km somewhere in Poland. It looks quite offensive (though I love Poland) because we have a lot of monuments in Żmerynka as it could be seen here<http://uk.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%92%D1%96%D0%BA%D1%96%D0%BF%D0%B5%D0%B4%D1%…>. There was a very subtle typo earlier try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Register_of_Historic_Places_listings_…. As far as dates, I'd guess most American would prefer the month of July. Folks are on vacation and have the time for recreational photography. The month is also very symbolic, e.g. Independence Day in the US, Canada Day in Canada, Bastille Day in France, etc. Also daylight in the northern hemisphere is near its longest, which can help in photography (sorry Australia!) One more American quirk - "Monuments" here means lots of things here - but is probably most associated with what we've been calling "public art" - sculptures to famous people. Another use is for "gravestone". So while most of us probably understand how "registered historic places" fits in with "Wiki Loves Monuments" it seems just a bit off. Any chance of getting a new title next July??! Help! List to template transformation

Hi, dear colleagues! We need some technical help. I've created a Template *Шаблон:WLM-рядок* <http://uk.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A8%D0%B0%D0%B1%D0%BB%D0%BE%D0%BD:WLM-%D1%8…>nearly the same as polish *Wikiprojekt:Wiki Lubi Zabytki/wykazy/wiersz *and now I have 2 actual questions for continuing work. 1. How could I transform in automatic mode a list from a standard wiki form to templated? For example here<http://uk.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%92%D1%96%D0%BA%D1%96%D0%BF%D0%B5%D0%B4%D1%…>is a table where I've templated only first 2 rows but the others have not yet. Of course whole the list must be templated but doing it by hands is too dull work. 2. How could I make in automatic mode some more complex transformations in case if I have a list with more parameters? For example here<http://uk.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9F%D0%B0%D0%BC%27%D1%8F%D1%82%D0%BA%D0%B8_…> we have 10 parametres, and only 4 of them are needed for WLM-lists and 3 are missing. So this list also need transformation, and also doing it by hands is too dull work. The problem is that hundreds of tables need such transformations. For example only for Vinnica district<http://uk.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9A%D0%B0%D1%82%D0%B5%D0%B3%D0%BE%D1%80%D1%…>we have 27 lists of historical monuments, 28 - architect, 30 - archaeology, 1 great list - memorials, and additionaly 5 are monuments in cities. Photographing Public art in the US has some special problems (though other areas may have their own special problems!) 1. is copyright protection, but see http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Public_art_and_copyrights_in_the_… which is quite helpful 2. is getting a list of what is considered "public art." The Smithsonian Institution maintains a list of art known as SIRIS and a sub-list SOS (Save our Sculpture) and it is fairly easy to determine what is outside. BUT, it can include almost anything that might be possibly considered sculpture - e.g. 10 little knick-knacks carved on the front of a small church, or several dozen individual copies of one commercially sold war memorial. Also good addresses and updated info can be rare and coordinates are non-existant. In short very messy and too large. Prizes and Goodies for all chapters

Hi all of You, due to the generous offer of the Lettera27 Foundation<http://www.lettera27.org/>and WikiAfrica <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiAfrica>from Italy to give us moleskine <http://www.moleskine.com/>notebooks with the imprint of the Wiki Loves monument logo, we now do have the opportunity to ship out prizes and goodies to all participating chapters. One parcel per chapter could be send from Germany to the other chapters rather independent to its weight for the same prize. Up to 30 kg for each parcel. WLM International will stand for the shipping costs. So if You have some ideas please come with consistent proposals. We will try to get the parcels shipped around the 15th of August. Which means the items have to be in Berlin until the *5th of August*. As packaging and addressing has to be taken in account. I know we have been discussing this point before, concerning calendars and t-shirts. We came to the result that it will be to expensive and to inefficient to have a central distribution for prizes and goodies. But going into detailed research it turns out, that in fact DHL is offering a handsome condition. So if You could have an sponsor at hand, like an editing house for non fiction books on digital photography, or a T-shirt producer, or more ideas to come, please let us know. At least the distribution, as long as the total weight of the parcel is not above 30 kg, is pretty solved. Hi all, yesterday the Zedlerprize was awarded at the WikiAcademy in Berlin. We are happy that the community project Wiki loves monument was elected as winner by the jury. Especially helpfull to the sucess of the project was the throgoughly change of attitude of the Federal Office of Heritage Austria (BDA). As Dr. Holzschuh-Hofer of the BDA expressed it: Thanks to Wiki loves Monument and the collaboration with the volunteers of Wikipedia, we have experienced that open acess gives the better result. Dear All, Further to my previous email, I wish to advise that it is our opinion as well as the National Heritage Council and the sponsors we have contacted that the competition should take place in Israel between 14 September and 14 October (ie during the month of Tishrei) for the following reasons: * Between 16 September and 26 September are the High Holidays of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur during which we cannot do events and it is unlikely that pictures will be uploaded during these holidays. * During the holiday of Sukkot (30 September - 9 October) the Israeli public usually tours the country and visits locations around the country. Therefore, this holiday period may be used for the competition, and many events may be scheduled for this holiday. We will make sure that the final results be sent to the international competition on time, i.e. by 21 October, and therefore the shift in the competition dates should not affect the international competition. We are curious as to what the budgets of the other participants are; are there maybe some other countries that would be so kind to share this with us?
