The rapid grant application process for *Cycle 3* is now open and will
close on *1st November*. If you are planning to use rapid funds, I
encourage you to apply as soon as possible, since this cycle is the most
suitable for supporting Wiki Loves Africa 2026 activities.
The theme for next year’s competition will be *“Rites and Rituals

which we believe will create exciting opportunities to showcase the depth

This extension is designed to simplify the management of community events,
projects, and campaigns, such as yours! In addition to facilitating the
discovery and participation of all contributors in these events. Once it's
enabled on Wikimedia Commons, organizers will have access to features that
will help communicate with participants, as well as plan, organize, and
promote events/campaigns/projects on Wikimedia Commons, without having to
rely on external platforms.

Dear African Wikimedians,
Every year, we come together to celebrate Africa’s richness, creativity,
and diversity through Wiki Loves Africa
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Africa>, an annual
photo, video, and audio contest that invites people across Africa to
document everyday life across the continent and share it with the world.
Since 2014, the campaign has brought together over 12,854 creatives who
have contributed over 146,698 media (photography, video and audio) files
used in thousands of Wikipedia articles that now celebrate African
perspectives. Beyond the numbers, it has become a community celebration, a
chance for Africans to tell their own stories, showcase their realities,
and preserve cultural knowledge for future generations, and for Wikimedians
to get together. In line with these efforts, we’ve published a press release

the winners of Wiki Loves Africa 2025.
It’s always an exciting moment when we unveil the next theme, and today we
are thrilled to share the focus for Wiki Loves Africa 2026, which will be
the 12th iteration of Wiki Loves Africa!
The theme for Wiki Loves Africa 2026 is Rites and Rituals.
Why Rites and Rituals?
Rites and Rituals are everywhere in African life. They shape how we welcome
new life, honour the departed, celebrate milestones, and connect with each
other. They exist in intimate moments, such as a morning greeting, hair
braiding, or brewing tea. They bring the collective together, such as
through parades, harvest festivals, or religious ceremonies. They can be
rooted in tradition, contemporary interpretations or a practice that is
modern or entirely new.
The 2026 theme invites contributors to capture:

Rites of passage (naming, coming-of-age, marriage, funerals)

Religious rituals (prayer, pilgrimages, festivals, offerings)

Cultural expressions (dance, masquerades, storytelling, crafts)
-
Everyday traditions (cooking, markets, greetings, communal chores)

Civic acts (national days, parades, flag-raising)
-
Creative festivals (music, theatre, visual arts, crafts)
From the smallest gestures to the grandest celebrations, these rituals hold
meaning, memory, and identity. Together, they form the cultural heartbeat
of Africa.

Funding Drives Wiki Loves Africa Forward
The Wikimedia Foundation’s Rapid Grants (Cycle 3) are currently open for
individuals, groups and communities who want to participate in Wiki Loves
Africa 2026. If you’re seeking funding for your project or community
initiative, apply for funding for Wiki Loves Africa 2026 campaign before 1

Pourquoi des rites et des rituels ?
Les rites et les rituels sont omniprésents dans la vie africaine. Ils
façonnent notre façon d'accueillir la nouvelle vie, d'honorer les défunts,
de célébrer les étapes importantes et de créer des liens. Ils sont présents
dans les moments intimes, comme les salutations matinales, le tressage des
cheveux ou l'infusion du thé. Ils rassemblent le collectif, par exemple
lors des défilés, des fêtes des récoltes ou des cérémonies religieuses. Ils
peuvent être ancrés dans la tradition, des interprétations contemporaines
ou une pratique moderne ou entièrement nouvelle.
Le thème 2026 invite les contributeurs à capturer :
