This is the famous Mysore University encyclopedia. 13
volumes have come out
so far. Its work started long ago, may be about 15 years ago. 13th volume
came out about 2 years ago. 14th volume is expected. Since the release of
volumes took so much time gap, there are every few people who have all the
volumes. I have read some portions of it. Especially, the section on
computer. Very well written. G T Naraya Rao is a good Kannada scince writer.
His specialty is astronomy.
yeah, the standard of kannada used is very high, which is what makes
it a good read. (It is quite exhaustive on details, as well, though
obviously latest stuff would be missing from it all the time, no
matter how frequent the volume releases are.)
Having said that, there are issues:
1) It is not available online.
2) It cannot be made available for free. (Few of you here might
already know that kannada wikipedia is experimentally being bundled
with Maitre* CDs, which will go to numerous rural schools... More
here:
http://kannada.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Maitre)
* - Pramod has been working on morphix that would include complete
kannada support and is installable in a jiffy (and can be run 'live'
via CD as well). Kannada wikipedia would be included as static html on
the CD.
3) It is not available in an electronic, searchable media [1] (One has
to go look up indexes manually to find the articles) One can arguably
say that it (as of now) is a gem that fits aptly in a traditional
library.
4) Last, but not least, It is not like *wiki* ;)
Recently Mysore University, in collaboration with a
private company and
Kannada Ganaka Parishat are bringing out the encyclopedia in CDs. But the
sad part is that they are not using Unicode and hence the CDs are already
obsolete.
[1] - I just had a chance once to look at the CDs and apparently what
we find on the CD-ROMs is a Flash applet. Moreover, as pointed out by
Dr. U.B.P, there ain't any unicode, so no-searchability (it might
probably have a topic Index - but thats different)

There is one more interesting article regarding a very complete
encyclopedia in Kannada, one of the first among vernacular languages.
Here is the link to the article :

Does anyone know which encyclopedia does this article refer to?
