if you've got an anglo name, fair enough, there's no problem getting in and out of
the USA without ending up in the clanger - but if you happen to be one of the 90% of the
world's population with a shade of colouring slightly darker than splodgy pink, well,
let's be honest, why take the risk? remembering that it is only 40 years ago that
blacks had to give up their seat on the bus in favour of whites or risk going to jail.
Will there be anyone there representing the arabic or swahili wikipedias? Not a chance

In the "Why and why not?" survey it seems to me that Toronto was largely
favourite among the wikipedians, or not? And the last e-mail about the security
and the VISA in the USA wasn't very convincing.
No c'è un segreto. Both cities presented extremely strong bids, and
the jury was strongly split between the two. The real reason is
nothing else than that the majority of the jury was convinced that we
could (and should) overcome the visa problems, and that Boston and
Harvard were a choice place for Wikimania. I will just add one thing,
there definitely was not consensus in this choice.
I sincerely hope that this will not prevent any of you from coming, on
political grounds only, and that we can show the international
community that we have taken their concerns at heart and will try to
make it as easy as possible for everybody.
