I'm having trouble loading any Wikimedia sites from here in the UK. Anyone know what the problem is and what the best status page to check is? I've found these ones so far:

downornot.com is hosted in the US; readers in the UK access the Amsterdam squids (AFAIK). So that wouldn't help.
Is there an official but non-WMF-hosted status site?

You can try tracerouting it.
In Windows XP: * Start * Run * "cmd" * "tracert www.wikipedia.org"
and that will tell you where your connection is dying.
For example this what the traceroute may return:

I may try that. But if it helps, the bit it seems to keep getting stuck on is where the browser says:
"waiting for bits.wikimedia.org"
I've Googled that and some information is coming up, but not much that I understand.

Different machine, but probably in the same rack!
I'd suspect it's your ISP. Do the traceroute and email it to your ISP tech support. You may want to attach my messages as what it looks like from zen.co.uk, so they can see it works for another UK ISP but not for you.

Are you having difficulty accessing any other sites? Wikipedia is working perfectly for me (in the UK), so it's very unlikely to be a problem with Wikipedia. The problem must be at your end.
bits.wikimedia.org is where things like the CSS come from. Try en.wikipedia.org - that's the actual domain you need to be able to access.

When I try and access en.wikipedia.org, it hangs when it tries to load the CSS things from bits.wikimedia.org (if I wait long enough, it loads a stripped-down version of the site). It might actually just be a local cache or cookie problem. Let me try something else and see if it helps. Then I'll stop using wiki-en-l as technical support... :-)

I can use Google caches to get information from Wikipedia, but I can't add stuff.

I should add, en:wp is working fine for me in the UK, so it's up and Amsterdam is up :-)
Traceroute (tracert in Windows) will indeed give the correct answer. Here's what mine looks like, from Zen.co.uk:

I prefer just to directly look at what the servers are up to:
It's only a broad overview of course and doesn't catch everything but if there are a bunch of peaks where there shouldn't be that generally suggests the problem is as wikimedia's end.
