It certainly sounds like a bug. There are many bugs associated with
the upgrade to MediaWiki 1.5 (and also many invaluable new features).
The developers will obviously work to fix any problems, but that will
take time. I suggest if you don't want your block to be extended
automagically by the software, stop trying to edit until the block has
expired.

block whenever I do that. This is what happens when you upgrade to
beta version of software. Try a test block on another account and
you'll see it will automatically renew the block even if you're logged
in as the same user who was originally blocked. That's a bug or some
strange misfeature.
