don't know if you know about this project, but
archive.org
keeps snapshots of websites, like a library for the internet. There was an
interesting interview with the inventor in the New Scientist a little
while back (It's probably available online if you look for it).
The stored records of web pages at
archive.org can be accessed for research
purposes. One must make an application however and get approval. I think we
could do that though the auspices of wikipedia eventually. They more or
less want to know what institution you are with.
