No, we're intimidated by the people who scream bloody murder if "the rules" aren't followed.  Those who frequent Votes for Undeletion, those who live just to attack people for not doing things the way THEY want them done.  "The rule" is that things stay on VfD for 7 days.  What's so wrong with just letting it sit until then, if you're sure it won't be kept?

It seems to me that with such a voting trend the item should simply be
removed from the VfD page. Are people so intimidated by the wrath of
the VfD denizens?
