However, we're better at deleting new articles than writing them and writing a new article that will survive these days requires more detailed research than in years gone by.

I'm all for disability access, but why specifically to Wikimedia as opposed to The Internet or computing in general? There are some things that we could and in my view should be doing to make our sites more open to people with disabilities. Colour schemes in templates maps and so forth should be designed to give contrast that works for various forms of colour blindness, and there are still lots of images in wikipedia that need alt text for people using text readers. Is this even possible? Apparently you write the word on a piece of paper, and then the pen displays the article from a memory dump containing the top 100,000 English Wikipedia articles. This survey is part of a Master Thesis research project which investigates the effects of the increasing participation at reliability of Wikipedia. The survey is designed to collect information that will help me to identify the contributors to Wikipedia. Okay then, let me ask how do you intend to measure "start them editing"? Raw edit counts? Over what period of time? Will what namespace matter? Frankly I'm not as interested in getting new people *started* editing as I am I in *keeping* them editing. Many new editors get frustrated because they don't understand basic rules like proper sourcing and citation. Many are not good at reading our written rules - that's why I was excited to see those tutorial videos. I really think they can bridge the gap for the majority of people who don't do well with just RTFM. That's why I say that at least a link to those videos should be on *every* version of that landing page. Missing Wikipedians: An Essay

Heather Ford, a former Wikimedia advisory board member and researcher/writer in South Africa has written an essay, "The Missing Wikipedians" about systematic bias on English Wikipedia (especially) against new users and topics pertinent to Africa and other diverse places/people. Accessibility of technical articles

There has been some interesting debate on the site about technical articles. I found it ironic that when I discussed a particular article here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:CBM#Mathematics_article_I_found_diff… The edit that was made to make the article more accessible (to me, at least), was reverted: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Poincar%C3%A9_conjecture&diff=pre… With the edit summary: "It's a boundary not a surface--but no need to put in the lede, people can follow the link)". Unfortunately, following the link didn't really help me. "In mathematics, a 3-manifold is a 3-dimensional manifold. The topological, piecewise-linear, and smooth categories are all equivalent in three dimensions, so little distinction is made in whether we are dealing with say, topological 3-manifolds, or smooth 3-manifolds." I found the edit made to the original article much clearer, in that it said that the 3-sphere is the "the surface of the [[unit ball]] in four-dimensional space." I suppose adding the word "informally" might soothe mathematicians who insist on precise language. Carcharoth

HI, I am trying to add inthe missing ottman history of Prizren and getting into some petty dispute. please help advise on how to procede, in the city of Prizren the official languages are Serbian, Albanian and Turkish, and there is a large Bosnian and Gorani population, if there are alternative names for mosques (and webpages) in those languages, we should list them, no? But I still have a great debt to the anonymous toilers of Wikipedia who made my research much easier at many points in time. [272-273]' " Story two. "My daughter (a sophomore in high school) was given an assignment to introduce errors into Wikipedia. This encyclopedia has been rated as C-Class on the project's quality scale. This encyclopedia has been checked against the following criteria for B-Class status: 1. Referencing and citation: criterion not met (many common articles are not adequately referenced) 2. Coverage and accuracy: criterion not met (currently 3.5 million of an estimated 4.4 million articles) 3. Structure: criterion met (seems to be reasonably well structured) 4. Grammar and style: criterion met (mostly good enough, but would not please a purist) 5. Supporting materials: criterion met (multiple wikis surround and support it) I therefore award the Wikipedia class C: The Wikipedia is substantial, but is still missing important content or contains a lot of irrelevant material. The Wikipedia should have references to reliable sources, but may still have significant issues or require substantial cleanup. The Wikipedia is better developed in style, structure and quality than Start-Class, but fails one or more of the criteria for B-Class. It may have some gaps or missing elements; need editing for clarity, balance or flow; or contain policy violations such as bias or original research. Useful to a casual reader, but would not overall provide a complete picture for even a moderately detailed study. Considerable editing is needed to close gaps in content and address cleanup issues. -- -Ian Woollard

The most visible change for Wikimedia users will be the deployment of ResourceLoader [1]. ResourceLoader optimizes the use of JavaScript in MediaWiki, speeding up its delivery by compressing it sometimes, and cutting down on the amount of unused JavaScript that gets delivered to the browser in the first place. The installation of ResourceLoader may cause compatibility issues with existing JavaScript code. Wikipedia proofing its bias again

Hi, a cartoon illustrating Western double-standard in 2005th Muhammad Cartoon controversy got speedy deleted on 2011-01-30 under WP:CSD "F6: Non-free file with no non-free use rationale: invalid fair-use tag" which is wrong, because it had a {{Non-free use rationale}} template. Apparently it doesn't matter at all because on its WP:DRV now it's claimed, that this cartoon is not contextual significant enough for [[Opinions on the Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy]]. Why is Wikipedia trying so hard to proof this cartoon to be correct?
