I was about to write a one-year evaluation of my
Wikipedia experience, but that will have to wait to a
rainy day. Today I have one, in my opinion, important
thought, that I would like to share with you.
I think I've made no secret of my dislike for Wik. Or
rather for many of his ways and actions. There is no
need to deny, that I think he is one of the
contributors who harm wikipedia much more than they
make good, although this doesn't mean that I think Wik
is factually wrong (particularly often), not at all.
However, I am concerned about Wikipedia-discussions
tending to become personalized. As if everything would
be OK if only this or that person was tought better -
alternatively chased away.
I think this is a totally wrong approach.
I think what concerned intelligent and experienced
wikipedians should better put their energy into, is
not the question of what to do with this or that
harmful person, but instead what to change in
wikipedia to make wikipedia less vulnerable for the
harm they cause.
(Of course I have ideas myself, but my intention here
is not to promote a particular solution. :-)
Greetings!

Wik really isn't making unprovoked abusive comments. Wik *has* said some rude
things on occasion. On a more systematic basis, his editing style has been
characterised as being rude.
Equally, people have said rude, even provocative, things about Wik, on occasion. For
example, earlier on this list, Jacob Roberson described Wik as, in part, a "troll, vandal,
edit warrior, and pov warrior...".

Such as, say, discussing the issue with Wik, and thus persuading him to remove some
comments from his user page that a variety of people felt were inappropriate. Oh wait,
people did that. And it worked...

I thought we had one. According to [[wikipedia:no personal attacks]], "Many Wikipedians
remove personal attacks on sight. In extreme cases, users have been banned for
repeatedly engaging in personal attacks".
Perhaps this policy should be changed, if you don't like its results?

I posted this today on the External Search Engines page
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:External_search_engines), thought
it might be worthwhile to cc it here:
Has anyone explored the Atomz Search application for use on
Wikipedia? (see http://www.atomz.com/applications/search/ and also their
FAQ
<http://www.atomz.com/applications/search/faq.htm>http://www.atomz.com/applications/search/faq.<http://www.atomz.com/applications/search/faq.htm>htm
).
I use the free Express version for my personal site, and it works very
well, is extraordinarily customizable, easy to integrate into a site, and
you control ''when'' content is indexed. I've seen it on many other pro
sites as well.
It's a pay service for sites with more than 500 pages (heh), and of course
there's no pricing on their website -- it's ye olde "contact our sales
staff" routine. It may be too pricey for a site as large and
index-intensive as this one, but it should at least be worth exploring.....
especially since the search application in hosted on '''''their'''''
servers, not ours. And who knows, they may be willing to negotiate a deal
with a site as prominent as ours is becoming.
Perhaps Jimbo or someone else with an idea of how much we would be willing
to spend to have a reliable internal search mechanism could contact them...?

I will be attending a family reunion in New Hampshire July 24-July 31.
That 2 1/2 months from now, so I am thinking that we have time to
organize a Wikipedia meeting there, fashioned after the meetings we
will be having in Europe this summer, i.e. informal gatherings
spontaneously organized.
I think that for most people the weekends are best, and so I
tentatively nominate July 25th, Sunday, as the best time for a
meeting. I think that the best location would be Boston, since that's
closer to New York than New Hampshire is, and a big enough city on
it's own of course.

Please sign up, volunteer to organize, make suggestions, etc.
