Hey folks :)
Have you ever wondered what is happening on Wikidata around you? What does Wikidata know about the building next door? Or the tube station a few blocks away? Now you can find out. Head over to https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:Nearby and you will know. This is another piece in the puzzle to making it easier to get an overview of the data you care about.
Share if you find something cool and unexpected around you!
Cheers Lydia
PS: A special thanks to everyone who helped get this out including Max Semenik, Jon Robson, Florian, Erik Bernhardson and David Causse..
This is so great potentially for local face-to-face Wikidata networking, and in so many other ways.

Very nice!
A few quick comments: * It keeps asking me to share my location (FF40/Mac), even though I agree. Maybe a cookie issue? * This also happens when I click on an item. * Testing near Wikidata HQ ;-) I found quite a few items without image. Note that you can construct a link for specific items (as in, items in your results without image) to WD-FIST. Example (three items closest to my location): https://tools.wmflabs.org/fist/wdfist/index.html?wdq=items%5b1975500,629084,...
In this case, I could instantly add an image for two of the three items (I didn't, for demonstration's sake). Maybe worth a thought.
Cheers, Magnus

Just to add... today I hacked up a script that adds a "nearby" (globe icon) button that is displayed at the top of items that have coordinates.
Click on the globe and it takes you to Special:Nearby which then shows articles near that item (instead of your location).
mw.loader.using([], function() { importStylesheet('User:Aude/nearby.css'); importScript('User:Aude/nearby.js');});
For now, the script only works in the desktop view/mode. I'll have to look into how this could be added in mobile view also.
Cheers, Katie

You can also do a link into WD-FIST using an arbitrary set of coordinates, which might help with a tool like this -
https://tools.wmflabs.org/fist/wdfist/index.html?wdq=around%5b625,52.205,0.1...
(1 km from centre of Cambridge)
You get interesting results for capital cities, though...

And here's a little experiment if you want to do the "nearby missing images" remotely: a map of Australia, divided up into 1x1 degree squares, showing the number of items in those squares with no P18, and preloaded links to FIST:

(contemplating generating a world map of these...)

I did northern Australia for a bit and then found myself thinking about holidays...
After some (very prolonged) interrogation of the API, here's a world map, now with colour-coding for cells rather than absolute numbers:
