Dear Wikimedians,
The call for proposals for grants to organise WikiCite satellite events https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite to be held first half of 2020 is now open.
WikiCite is an initiative to develop open citations and linked bibliographic data to serve free knowledge. Since 2016, there has been an annual conference in support of that goal. In 2020, this will become a series of independently organised Satellite events around the world.
The steering committee, with the financial support of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the Wikimedia Foundation, are offering grants to support WikiCite Satellite events in three categories for events happening in the first half of 2020:
1.
*International events in association with professional conferences *[Maximum $10k each, Application deadline 1 February] (details https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite#1:_International_events_in_association_with_professional_conferences ) 2.
Local workshops and meetups [Maximum $2k each, Open until funds are allocated] (details https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite#2:_Local_workshops_and_meetups ) 3.
Events seeking non-financial support (details https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite#3:_Events_seeking_non-financial_support )
Submissions are especially encouraged if they are related to marginalised knowledge and/or hosted at a location in the global South.
To read the detailed criteria for each of these categories, and to apply for a WikiCite Satellite event grant, visit:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite
Sincerely and on behalf of the steering committee http://wikicite/administration#Coordination,
Liam Wyatt / Wittylama WikiCite program manager [WMF Contractor]
Note: If you wish to host an event in support of WikiCite’s aims, but do not require any support, you do not need to apply for ‘permission’. Please add your event to the ongoing calendar of events https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite/media.
Dear all, I'm just bumping this thread - to remind those on this list about the WikiCite Satellite event grants process that is open, for events happening in the first half of 2020.
Notably, the larger grant category has a deadline at the *end of this month*. This is for grants up to $10k (USD equivalent) for events in association with professional conferences.
The second category, for up to $2k, is for any kind of event/workshop/meetup which can have a practical impact on the issues of structured, open, citations in your community. Applications for these grants are reviewed every two weeks until the funding is spent. So... the sooner you apply, the better!
All the details, criteria, and application form, are at Meta wiki here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite#2020_Satellite_Events_-_Call_for_Pr...
Please feel free to write back to me directly/privately if you have any questions.
Sincerely, - Liam Wyatt

Dear WikiCite and Wikidata lists, This is an update on the previously announced call for grant applications for 'WikiCite satellite events' (see the emails in this thread below, for context about the grant program).
The steering committee[0] and I were very pleased to receive 15 very diverse applications for event funding from all around the world and, given the budget available to us, we were pleased to approve funding 9 of those proposals. At this stage, I had been intending to formally announce these events to you all. However...
As you are all well aware, a lot has changed recently in the world especially with regards to in-person events. Therefore, in alignment with the new Wikimedia Foundation policy[1], we have asked all of the WikiCite Satellite events [which have not yet occured] to either cancel, postpone (until at *least* mid-September), or convert into an online-participation activity.
Two of the Satellite events have already occured. You can read about them here:
- WikiCite Australia/New Zealand: Linking bibliographic data – February, Melbourne, Australia.[2] - Biblio Workshop 2020 – March, Horní Bezděkov, Czech Republic.[3]
Thank you to WM-Australia and WM-CzechRepublic for hosting these excellent activities :-)
Two of the future events had already publicly announced themselves and were in the process of planning:
- Wikicite Satellite Event India 2020 – April 18-19 New Delhi, India.[4] We are in discussion about how to convert this to an online activity. - WikiCite Satellite Cologne 2020 - May 6-8th Cologne, Germany.[5] The event organisers have announced a postponement until the northern-Autumn.
The remaining 5 events had not yet been widely publicised by their organisers. Rather than announcing them now all at once, as was the original plan, the organisers of those events which are planning to continue will share – once their postponement/adaptation plans are confirmed. Some of the remaining 7 events chosen to cancel, some to postpone, and some to convert to online activities. We are discussing with grantees who wish to convert to online activities what kinds of budget, intended outcomes, and practical support requirements would be appropriate/applicable. For the time being, the best place for the movement as a whole to discuss that issue is on Meta at "WikiProject Remote Event Participation"[6]
I apologise that I am not able to make a happy announcement today about 9 interesting OpenCitations focused events around the world happening in Q1/Q2 2020. I thank you for your understanding as we try to rapidly adjust and negotiate new plans with these approved grantees.
Sincerely, from day 15 of quarantine here in Northern Italy, - Liam Wyatt Program Manager for WikiCite https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite Wikimedia Foundation

Hi Mark, that's a nice initiative! Would be great to see metadata for the included works end up in Wikidata. Daniel
