I wouldn't know if this is the first time, particularly because I am not sure how to describe it. Google is contributing a lot to all kind of efforts, many of them open, as you know, so, in short, it depends on your definition :)

My position is located in Google AI (i.e. Google Research), not the Open Source office. But I plan to publish more code forthgoing, so I will continue to work with them.

That's very interesting! Is it the first free culture project for which
something of the like happens? From what you write, I understand it will
be something separate from the Google Open Source office, right?
