I didn't include the "Declarative programming languages" category, so SQL should actually be #6. I updated the code to present the results as a numbered list.

If you have access to Mathematica then you just copy, paste, and press Shift+Enter. I'll assume you don't though. If this application motivates you to want to learn to program then there is no better time than now to start. I've been programming for most of my life, and I plan to continue doing so for a long time.

I just merged some categories for programming languages and the top 10 are currently:

C (programming language)

JavaScript

D (programming language)

PHP

Java (programming language)

C++

Python (programming language)

C Sharp (programming language)

Visual Basic

MUMPS

Mathematica was close to 40th. JavaScript and PHP are used heavily in the MediaWiki software, and many other websites. Python will give you a free experience that is closest to Mathematica. After you learn one or two programming languages then you know how to quickly use the documentation for any of them, which is all you really need to know. I'd be happy to guide you through translating the code to Python through one-on-one emails or chats.

Oh, I discovered it on Wikipedia, not at school. I got the "Home" edition for $300, which seems to be about standard for other things like commercial graphics software. Although I've been happier with free graphics software like GIMP and Blender more than free programming languages. I'm not trying to sell you Mathematica though. I was just looking for feedback on browsing categories by popularity. It complements the way I already use Wikipedia, but that doesn't mean many other people would be interested in it.
