A few things:

This page does say the username is case sensitive.  Is it really?  https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Logging_in

It is case sensitive... except for the first letter.

History note: this derives from usernames being a type of page.
Platonides, PLATONIDES and PlAtOnIdEs are different usernames, just as they would be different article pages on wikipedia, since the first letter is always capitalised there.
There are however some wikis (such as wiktionaries) configures so that the articles do not get an automatic capital letter. But for consistency, the "always place first username letter in capital" rule is applied everywhere.

I do not see a reset password or request for temporary password on the login screen as it described on that help page:

----

What if I forget the password or username?

Your username is case sensitive. If you enter an email address when signing up for the account, or in your Preferences, you can make a request on the login screen for a temporary password to be sent to that address, which will allow you to retrieve your account. If you did not enter an email address, or the address was out of date, you will have to create a new account under a different username.

You would have to use https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:PasswordReset

Instead I only see this when typing in my email address in the username box and leaving password box empty:

Logging in with an email on the username field is not supported. There is an old request for that but, in addition of old accounts that could contain an at sign, there may be multiple accounts with the same email (such as a bot and its owner).
