MediaWiki is the software used by Wikipedia and probably will be used for Wikidata too.

 

Since it is an open source and open content, when there is a community problem with content/policy it is possible for users

to fork a project by setting up a new instance of the software& data.

 

If Wikidata’s community rejects your data it would take lab IT person about an hour to set up your own Wikidata in your lab. Since linked data is supposed to be distributed this would be a public part of the web but still under your control it would be easy to integrate with other projects.

What I mean is that if this can't be done in Wikidata then someone
could go and set up a separate MediaWiki instance with the extensions
we're going to write and do that there instead.
