I can open the client and the repo, but there is nothing in it...
The instruction says: "Both repo and client contain the chemical elements
as test data"
I think this concerns to the central test database. Try http://wikidata-test-repo.wikimedia.de/wiki/Q344 which is really an element.
I would be surprised if any newly installed software contained actual data.
