Though I am not against this, I would like to keep the removal of categories, superseded by other thongs provided by Wikidata, still as an hypothesis.
Wikidata is a major step in our history, and it is likely to have so many effects that we can only discover with time. Still, a large part of our communities still has to adapt to this, and my fear is that, if someone of us starts talking about how categories are useless right now because of Wikidata, we will face a huge flame about this.
Please do not read my words as a {{strong oppose}} to the possibility to move to a "better" system, rather as an advice on being very thoughtful about this.

I'm not aware of any concrete plans to replace the category system with a solution from Wikidata, but I think it would make more sense to explore that option than to work on importing Wikipedia categories en masse into Wikidata. The relationship between Wikipedia categories and Wikidata pops up here and there in discussions -- a recent one was https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Project_chat/Archive/2013/06#Proposal_for_phase_4:_unify_and_centralize_categories.I think Wikidata properties and queries will likely go a long way toward obsolescing Wikipedia categories. Categories are essentially queries on a set of pre-defined properties. The manual maintenance that has been required to curate Wikipedia's category system seems like it could be largely eliminated (or, at least, centralized and streamlined) once Wikidata queries are deployed. Wikidata properties like those covered in https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Help:Basic_membership_properties also allow subjects to be arranged into a taxonomy of concepts, which is one of the main features of categories.

Lets forward this to here, maybe somebody here already thought about categories in wikidata.
