Hello everyone!
We are excited to announce that the next Language Community Meeting is
happening soon on May 29th at 15:00 UTC! If you would like to join, simply sign
up on the wiki page
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Language_and_Product_Localization/…>
.
This is a participant-driven meeting where we share updates on
language-related projects, discuss technical challenges in language wikis,
and collaborate on solutions. In the upcoming meeting, we will hear
presentations on topics such as building a living dictionary for Dagbani
and the Starter Kit Dashboard MVP.
Got a topic to share? Whether it is a technical update from your project, a
challenge you need help with, or a request for interpretation support, we
would love to hear from you! Feel free to reply to this message or add
agenda items to the document here
<https://etherpad.wikimedia.org/p/language-community-meeting-may-2026>.
Also, a quick update - Wikimedia Foundation renewed its Associate
membership with the Unicode Consortium earlier this year for another year.
As part of this membership, a coordination group has been set up to help
bridge community needs with the Consortium. If you have come across any
language or script related issues in your work on Wikimedia projects that
could benefit from Unicode’s involvement, it would be great to hear about
them. You can learn more about ongoing topic explorations here
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/WMF_membership_with_Unicode_Consortium#Unico…>.
Feel free to share thoughts on this talk page
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk:WMF_membership_with_Unicode_Consortium> or
reach out directly.
Also, feel free to translate this message into your local language and
share it on your village pump or other community channels to help spread
the word.
We look forward to your ideas and participation at the Language Community
Meeting. See you there!
Cheers,
Srishti

Hi folks,
You may recall our previous announcement that it's now possible to edit
statements on Wikidata Items using your mobile. If you haven't tried it
yet, you can enable the beta feature in your Preferences
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatur…>
(Beta features --> "Edit Wikidata Items on mobile devices") and then visit
any Item on your phone.
We're currently conducting user testing sessions to gather more feedback
before we go live (late May / early June). We have had feedback from some
of you (many thanks!) but we would like to chat with a few more editors
especially users of RTL scripts (e.g. Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, Urdu).
Sessions are held via video call, where you'll try editing different data
types and share your impressions with our UX team.
If you're open to participating, please use the link below to let us know,
and we will schedule a call with you:

Thank you very much for your help.

Hello everyone,
We would love to get your feedback on a tool we have been working on:
https://wise.wmcloud.org/
This is a search tool for images and videos on wikimedia. Currently is
searching only on media of the day (approximately 5000 videos). It searches
only the visual content of the file (not on metadata, filename, or
structured data). It also does face detection and recognition.
Please give it a go. Here's some examples:
*Semantic example queries:*
"man at a train station"
"एक व्यक्ति रेलवे स्टेशन पर" (Hindi)
"horse in an airplane"
"విమానంలో గుర్రం" (Telugu)
"man with a flower"
"pirate with a pistol"
*Face search (select "Faces"):*
Click the green "Image" button and paste an image URL
Example inputs:
* https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/00/Charlie_Chaplin.jpg
*
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0d/Neil_Armstrong_pose.jpg
[warning: some videos are ogv videos and your brownser may not play them,
so watch them on Commons, i.e., after clicking the search result, scroll
down to the media metadata table, and follow the link to commons]
*Key features include:*
* Semantic search using natural language to find relevant images on Commons
from the visual content only (not the structured data or description, only
the image itself)
* Face search: upload or paste a face image, and the tool will try to
identify and locate that person across images and videos, including
timestamps where they appear
* Audio search: search within audio files to find relevant segments
* Multilingual search: supports queries in multiple languages
We are actively improving the tool and would really appreciate any
feedback, suggestions, or ideas from the community. Here's some more
immediate future plans:
* Search on all wikimedia images (instead of only videos / media of the day)
* Show similar images when uploading an image to suggest filenames,
categories, and other relevant metadata

Hello everyone,
I'm excited to announce that we're preparing the next Wikidata community
gathering: the WikiProject Days 2026. The event will take place online,
from June 19 to 21, 2026 (Friday to Sunday).
Topic and goals
WikiProjects are a crucial part of data quality work on Wikidata. They help
newbies find their place and connect with others, and they inform data
modelling and quality decisions.
During this event, we want to:
-
Increase / encourage more editors to use WikiProjects as a space to
connect with others and inform data modelling and quality decisions.
-
Bring life back into neglected WikiProjects to make them more helpful
spaces.
-
Create guidelines of what is necessary for a good WikiProject.
-
Get feedback on how to bring visibility to WikiProjects from the
development side
Format and Registration
The event will be fully online and coordinated by Wikimedia Deutschland.
Sessions will include a mix of talks, workshops, discussions, and of course
games.
You can already register on the event page: WikiProjects Days 2026
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Event:WikiProjects_Days_2026> (click on the
"Register” tab). The event is open to everyone, regardless of experience
level. Sessions will be recorded and shared afterwards.
Propose a session (CFP)
Do you have a talk, workshop, or discussion in mind? We want to hear from
you.
We are looking for sessions that create space for discussions and
improvement around the WikiProjects: whether it's sharing your experience
with a specific WikiProject, facilitating a discussion on what makes a good
WikiProject, running a workshop on how to start one, on how to bring life
back into a neglected WikiProject and make it more useful again,
facilitating a discussion on how to use WikiProjects as a space to connect
with others and inform data modelling and quality decisions, or something
completely different you think is useful.
-
How to propose a session: Add your proposal on the talk page: Event
talk:WikiProjects Days 2026
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Event_talk:WikiProjects_Days_2026>
-
Deadline for proposals: May 26, 2026
Follow the discussion
We will post updates on our usual communication channels and on the event's
talk page. To stay informed, add the page to your watchlist. For any
questions or ideas, feel free to reach out to me directly.
Looking forward to seeing you at the WikiProject Days \o/
Cheers,

Hello,
Over the last few months the Global GLAM Calls
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Global_GLAM_calls> have grown
significantly! This month in April there were more than 100 registrations,
and 50 attendees on the call. This is incredible!
All this is thanks to your contribution, curiosity, and continued
engagement with culture, heritage, and Wikimedia projects.
In case you missed the call the recording is already available
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Event:Global_GLAM_call_2026-04-28> on
Commons. The topics, presenters, and documents, are also neatly organized
in Metabase <https://metabase.wikibase.cloud/wiki/Item:Q43731> for easy
search and reference.
But now’s the time to build out the agendas for the coming months. Do you
have a topic you’d like to present on or have a request for? Send it to the
organizers via the request form
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Global_GLAM_Calls/Topic_Requests> on
Meta-wiki.
In 2026 there’s special focus on topics from the Strategic Pillars (Small
GLAMs, Minority Languages, Robust Technical Infrastructure, and Community
(mental) Health, and GLAM Recognition) but all kinds of presentations and
discussions are welcome.
Registration for the May call
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Event:Global_GLAM_call_2026-05-26> is
already open, though the agenda is not 100% ready. See you online!
All the best,
Connor
