Hi all -
Wikimedia is participating in Round 30 of the Outreachy program
<https://www.outreachy.org/> [1] that runs from June 2025 through August
2025! The deadline to submit projects on the Outreachy website is March 4,
2025 at 4pm UTC and the project list will be finalized by March 14, 2025.
We are currently gathering a list of interesting project ideas. If you have
some ideas for coding or non-coding (design, documentation, translation,
outreach, research) projects, please share them on this task:
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T386245 [2]. (Note that tasks will be
hidden until the application period begins.)
About the Outreachy Program
Outreachy is a paid, remote three-month internship program. Outreachy's
goal is to support people from groups underrepresented in tech. We help
newcomers to free software and open source make their first contributions
in Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), coding, and non-coding projects
with experienced mentors.
Interns are paid a stipend of USD 7000 for the three months of work.
Outreachy internship projects may include programming, user experience,
documentation, illustration, graphical design, or data science. Interns
often find employment after their internship with Outreachy sponsors or in
jobs that use the skills they learned during their internship.
Outreachy expressly invites the following people to apply:
- women (both cis and trans), trans men, and genderqueer people to apply.
- residents and nationals of the United States of any gender who are
Black/African American, Hispanic/Latin@, Native American/American
Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander
- anyone who faces under-representation, systematic bias, or
discrimination in the technology industry of their country
More details and eligibility criteria can be found here:
https://www.outreachy.org/apply/eligibility/ [3]
Tips for mentors for proposing projects
As a mentor, you will engage with potential candidates in the application
period from February to March and help them make small contributions to
your project. You will work more closely with the accepted candidates
during the internship period from June through August.
Each mentor will need to submit an intern project proposal:
https://www.outreachy.org/communities/cfp/wikimedia/ [4]
The project proposal will then be reviewed and approved by the FOSS
community coordinators. Additional co-mentors for the intern project will
be able to sign up for the project after it has been approved by the
community coordinator.
Guidelines for Crafting Project Proposals
- A proposal should include:
- Brief summary
- Skills required
- Learning outcomes
- Possible mentor(s)
- Microtasks
- Each project should have at least two mentors, with one of them
holding a technical background.
- Ideally, the project has no tight deadlines, a moderate learning
curve, and fewer dependencies on Wikimedia's core infrastructure. Projects
addressing the needs of a language community are most welcome.
- Project should require an experienced developer ~15 days and a
newcomer ~3 months to complete.
- To learn more about the roles and responsibilities of mentors, visit
the resources:

After the successful working on solving the problem of human settlements
without a country, we have to move to the elephant in the room: items
without statements.
After some discussion in Telegram, let me share some numbers here.
There are currently 829k of them.
https://w.wiki/DEYs
There are another 493k items with only one identifier and no other
statement.
https://qlever.cs.uni-freiburg.de/wikidata/Z8OkZi?exec=true
Often that single identifier is just the Google Knowledge Graph ID (P2671).
So basically we have more than a million items that are empty or almost
empty.
(And this is not even the list of all items without any instance of (P31) /
subclass of (P279), nor a list of items with missing other basic
statements, like country, coordinates, sports, etc, etc.)
All these items are basically useless as they contain no data.
Any thoughts on how we can reduce this problem?

Hello, everyone –
We have our next LD4 Wikidata Affinity Group Session on Tuesday, March 4, 2025 at 9am PT / 12pm ET / 17:00 UTC / 6pm CET (Time zone converter<https://zonestamp.toolforge.org/1741107600>).
Eric Willey will be facilitating a series of four sessions focused on starting a Wikidata project from the foundation up at your institution. Sessions will be held on February 18, March 4, and March 18, 2025 at our regular time of 9am PT / 12pm ET / 17:00 UTC / 6pm CET.
Here is the plan for the series sessions:
Session 1 (February 4): Selling it to Admin (See series page<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_LD4_Wikidata_Affinity_Gr…> for recording and notes)
Projects need staff time or money to succeed, and we’re all short on both. This session will discuss strategies for convincing your administrators that allocating resources to a Wikidata Project will benefit your users and institution. While Eric works in a university library, this discussion is intended to be as broad as possible and participants from GLAM or other institutions outside the academic library setting are very welcome!
Session 2 (February 18): Choosing a Project (See series page<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_LD4_Wikidata_Affinity_Gr…> for recording and notes)
We don’t need to reinvent the can of worms just to nail jell-o to a half-baked pie. This session will focus on current and historical Wikidata projects on various themes and their documentation/outcomes, along with other resources for your project. Those resources can be re-used or adapted to a project at your institution, giving you a valuable head-start and eliminating some of the planning and initial groundwork.
🐬Session 3 (March 4): Making the Most of Your Time and Work 🐬
There is a saying in the Midwest, “If something is stuck don’t use force, just get a bigger hammer.” This session will focus on tools, gadgets and strategies to maximize your time and resources, automate work, and achieve more outcomes for your project. There are too many great resources to do a deep dive into each, but attendees will be introduced to a variety of tools they can then follow-up on for their own work.
Session 4 (March 18): Reporting Your Outcomes and Results
In the movie Mad Max: Fury Road, War Boy and open linked data enthusiast Nux says, “Witness me, shiny and chrome!” This session will focus on reporting back on your project once it’s over. Various tools for data visualization and other ways to demonstrate the impact and outcomes of your project to administration and interested parties will be discussed. Again, these will not be deep dives into any one tool or platform in favor of providing a variety of options for attendees to select which suits them best.
The call details are below. Sessions will be recorded, and the plan is to submit them for inclusion on Wikimedia Commons. Attendees should be aware that their remarks (written, verbal, or otherwise) will be included in those recordings. To receive notifications about upcoming calls and session information you can subscribe to the <https://groups.google.com/d/forum/ld4-wikidata> ld4-wikidata Google Group<https://groups.google.com/d/forum/ld4-wikidata>.

International Women's Day, Wikipedia editing workshops and Wikipedia and AI
For your diary (and for information):
1.
Read about Wikipedia and Artificial Intelligence.<https://thinking.is.ed.ac.uk/wir/wikipedia-and-artificial-intelligence/> Wikipedia is now 24 years old so how does it respond to the brave new world of AI?
2.
Learn how to edit Wikipedia in our monthly hybrid workshop this Friday 28 February<https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/imagine-a-gender-equal-world-help-write-wome…> from 1pm-2pm and then
Write and PUBLISH a new Wikipedia page of 50-100+ words from 2.30-5pm.
3.
Not everything is online. Far From it. So a little #KnowledgeActivism appearing in Google's top results is really impactful. Our International Women's Day event will feature a Wikipedia editing event on 1-5pm 7 March 2025<https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/imagine-a-gender-equal-world-help-write-wome…> to add more brilliant lives & contributions of women online.
Hope you can join us at one of these or all events! All welcome.
Best wishes,
