On behalf of the LD4 Conference Program Committee, I am pleased to post the official call for presentations for the 2020 LD4 Conference on Linked Data in Libraries. This work is closely linked to Wikidata and Wikicite work, and we warmly welcome Wiki related proposals so please consider submitting content for this great event and joining us May 13-14, 2020, at Texas A&M University, College Station, TX.
Call for Presentations and Program Content
LD4 Conference on Linked Data in Libraries: May 13-14, 2020
Preconference workshops: May 12, 2020
Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, USA
Submission deadline: Friday, January 31st at 11:59pm PST
At the 2020 LD4 Conference, to be held May 13-14 at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, USA, participants will learn concrete ways that linked data benefits GLAM institutions, and discover pathways to participation in linked data. Whether you have already implemented linked data in your work or are just getting started, you will leave with a better understanding of what linked data is, how it can be used, and what you can do to get started or continue to incorporate linked data in your institutions or projects. By bringing together a broad range of perspectives, and centering diversity, equity, inclusion, and ethics in our discussions, we will create a community of practice for linked data in libraries.
We are delighted to have Karen Hwang as our conference kick-off speaker. Karen's practice as a metadata professional and archivist is rooted in concerns of discoverability and representation. She works to promote underrepresented histories through digital collections, and has explored ways to implement linked open data to enhance and boost the discovery of cultural heritage resources. An advocate for such strategies, she also comments on disparities encountered along the way. Read more about Karen's work on the LD4 Conference website: http://ld4.io.
To create a meaningful and engaging conference, we are seeking proposals for contributions to the program in the following areas:
* Workflows: how projects are accomplished and scaled
* Organizational implementation: organizational changes, skill sets, infrastructure, and partnerships necessary to implement linked data
* Impact: outcomes of implemented projects, linked data in discovery environments, and user experience research
* Show and tell: demonstrations, posters, URIs that you minted-no project is too big or too small
We encourage proposals for presentations or sessions for the conference in the following formats:
* delivering a traditional presentation (30 minutes including question-and-answer time)
* giving a short lightning talk (10 minutes)
* leading a hands-on tutorial (60-90 minutes)
* demonstrating a tool (20 minutes)
* facilitating work on a defined project in a collaborative environment (60-90 minutes)
* facilitating a formal discussion session with panelists or a more informal birds-of-a-feather type discussion session with conference participants (60 minutes)
* exhibiting a poster
We also welcome proposals for half-day (3 hours) or full-day (6 hours) pre-conference workshops to be held on May 12, 2020. They should be targeted towards those with less experience in linked data, to prepare participants for the main conference content.
We especially encourage proposals (conference or pre-conference) from participants from groups and regions that are traditionally underrepresented in conferences related to linked data in libraries and other cultural heritage organizations, as well as proposals from early career professionals.
A $100 registration fee, collected upon acceptance of your submission and confirmation of your attendance, will help to cover conference expenses and will include food and beverages during morning and afternoon breaks as well as a lunch buffet for both conference days, May 13th and 14th. There will not be an additional registration fee for the pre-conference workshops.
Thanks to the generous support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, a limited number of stipends are available to make participation possible for those who would not otherwise be able to attend. We ask applicants to first seek support from their home institutions and organizations and to apply for stipends only if you do not have other resources available. Stipend applications will be reviewed by the Program Committee and recipients selected based on merit and need.
To propose a session please complete the presenter proposal form<https://stanforduniversity.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_ebmQF48Gn9bag6x> (which includes the application for stipends) by Friday, January 31st at 11:59 pm PST
The Program Committee will select proposals and contact all applicants by February 21st. For those interested in attending without proposing a session, a separate call for participation will be announced in late February.

Dear all,
You may have seen that we recently published a preprint entitled "Wikidata as a FAIR knowledge graph for the life sciences" [1]. This manuscript was primarily spearheaded by the Gene Wiki team [2], which has been active in data modeling and data ingestion for a variety of biomedical resources.
Our goal was to write a manuscript that educated the general biological community about Wikidata and to drive more growth and participation. To do this, we selected and described a series of scientific vignettes -- identifier translation, integrative biomedical SPARQL queries, crowdsourced curation, Wikidata-backed application development, and phenotype-based disease diagnosis. Those vignettes were based on our own areas of interest as well as our guess at what would appeal to our target audience.
Of course, there are many possible vignettes that could fit under the broad title we chose. As a matter of practicality, we could not include them all while still creating a final product of reasonable length and focus.
However, upon further reflection and discussion with colleagues, we realized that while the selection of vignettes needed to be somewhat limited, the manuscript should reflect a more complete and inclusive representation of the _people_ behind the larger movement, including those that worked on aspects that weren't directly highlighted as vignettes. Therefore, we'd like to invite anyone to add their name to the author list or acknowledgements by adding their name to this page [3]. Note that due to journal policies, all authors must still meet the ICMJE standards [4], but interpreted according to the broadly-defined title of the manuscript. (That broader scope might also be summarized by the class-level diagram that is included as Figure 1 in the manuscript [5].)
Finally, this message is being cross-posted to many places. We will monitor replies at [6] (and on this mailing list), but please ping/cc me to notify me of replies or discussion elsewhere.
Best regards,
-andrew

Hello,
apologies for cross-posting!
I am writing to inform you that at Wikimedia Deutschland we have decided to
stop having weekly Technical Advice IRC Meetings (TAIM)[1] at
#wikimedia-tech after the final meeting on December 18th. In other words,
Technical Advice IRC Meetings will not continue in 2020.
We realized that the regular IRC meeting format has achieved the limits of
its reach, and it is time for us to think about other means to better
support as many volunteer developers as possible contributing to Wikimedia
software.
At WMDE we’ll be dedicating our efforts in 2020 to constantly improve
documentation of our products, including Wikidata and Wikibase, to allow
easier usage and contribution. Our engineering teams are also exploring new
possibilities to support volunteer developers in a more asynchronous way
than regular IRC meetings. If you have any suggestions for this, please let
us know on our talk page.[2]
On this point we would like to send the warmest thank you to all the people
who hosted TAIM meetings, all participants asking and answering questions,
and all supporters of TAIM over the years.
Have a great seasonal break and see you around in 2020!
On behalf of TAIM crew at WMDE

Hi everyone,
I am happy to announce a new tool I've been working on for the last few
months, WDumper.
The tool is available at https://tools.wmflabs.org/wdumps/.
The idea is to provide a user interface to easily generate RDF dumps for
subsets of the data contained in Wikidata.
As an example, the tool can generate dumps with only english labels or
for a subset of the properties.
The tool is based on Wikidata Toolkit and processes the original JSON
dumps provided by Wikidata.
When you submit a request to create a dump, it will be added to a queue.
The queue is processed in regular intervals (the maximum wait time in
queue is 1h).
You can view a list of created dumps on
https://tools.wmflabs.org/wdumps/dumps.
The generated dump can either be downloaded directly or uploaded to
Zenodo for archival, which also generates a DOI for easy referencing in
scientific publications.
I want to thank Prof. Dr. Markus Krötzsch for the original idea for this
tool and support during the development of the tool.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask them by mail or create an
issue on the GitHub page: https://github.com/bennofs/wdumper. The
current version does not have a lot of features yet, so ideas for
extending the tool with additional filters or options that you'd like to
use are valuable feedback as well.
Also a small word of caution: while I did of course test the tool, the
Wikidata data model is quite complex. Since the tool is new, bugs are
more likely, so always apply a sanity check to the results.
If you find bugs, please tell me or create an issue on GitHub.
Regards,
Benno Fünfstück

Hello List,
I am happy to share our report on Wikidata use in cultural institutions
with you.
Thanks to our participants and everyone else who helped with this!
Wikidata attracts attention and users from many institutions from the
cultural sector – and the Wikidata Team wants to support their needs.
However, while we did exchange and learned a lot from cultural institutions
in the past, we did not have a written account based on research on
cultural institutions’ needs which helps to spread knowledge and
understanding for these users. This is why the UX Team of Wikimedia Germany
did such research. We now can share our Research Report on “Wikidata Use in
Cultural Institutions“.
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Research_Report_%E2%80%93_Use_of_Wi…
>From June-September 2019, my colleagues and me talked to 16 users who
worked at different cultural (“GLAM”) institutions to find out about “How
and why do people in cultural institutions use Wikidata?” and thus learn
more about participants’ motivations, activities and problems.
In the report, we describe…
- The advantages participants saw in sharing data
- Problems of modeling
- How people come to Wikidata via Wikimedia Commons
…and much more
The things we found out probably not new to some of you. Rather than
uncovering surprising results, the report aims to describe workflows and
motivations and to serve as a point of reference. This can be particularly
useful for people who had no previous exposure Wikidata and/or GLAM
institutions’ work and its context.
The research thus focussed on describing motivations, activities and
problems. While the data gathering was often like a conversation, the
research methods were based on qualitative research methods and design
ethnography – thus they supplement our other ways of learning from the
community, like direct personal exchange or interacting on talk pages.
We hope that the report is useful and interesting for you. Many thanks to
all the people who helped in creating the report, particularly the
participants from GLAM institutions who showed and explained to us how they
use Wikidata.
Kind Regards,
Jan

1. Call for Papers - Research Track
*******************************************
The research track of ESWC 2020 is looking for novel and significant research contributions addressing theoretical, analytical and empirical aspects of the Semantic Web. We also encourage contributions to research at the intersection of Semantic Web and other scientific disciplines. Submissions to the research track should describe original, significant research on the Semantic Web, and are expected to provide some principled means of evaluation. Specifically, all papers should include evaluations of the approaches described in the paper. We strongly encourage evaluations that are repeatable. We also strongly encourage papers that provide links to: the data sets, source code, queries and other resources.
Based on previous years submissions, this year we are setting up ten research tracks that reflect some of the main research areas of the Semantic Web and its intersection with other scientific disciplines:

2. Call for Papers - Resources Track
*******************************************
Many of the research efforts in the areas of the Semantic Web,Linked Data and Knowledge Graphs focus on publishing scientific papers that prove a hypothesis. However, scientific advancement is often reliant on good quality resources that provide the necessary scaffolding to support the scientific publications. Sharing these resources and the best practices that have lead to their development with the research community is crucial, to consolidate research material, ensure reproducibility of results and in general gain new scientific insights.
The ESWC 2020 Resources Track aims to promote the sharing of resources including, but not limited to: datasets, ontologies, vocabularies, annotated corpora, workflows, knowledge graphs, evaluation benchmarks or methods, replication studies, services, APIs and software frameworks that have contributed to the generation of novel scientific work. In particular, we encourage the sharing of such resources following best and well established practices within the Semantic Web community, including the provision of an open license and a permalink identifying the resource. This track calls for contributions that provide a concise and clear description of a resource and its usage. A typical Resource track paper has its focus set on reporting on one of the following categories:
* Ontologies developed for an application, with a focus on describing the modelling process underlying their creation;
* Datasets produced to support specific evaluation tasks or by a novel algorithm;
* Knowledge graphs or remarkable interest that comprehensively cover new vertical domains;
* Machine learning models that would impact the knowledge engineering community. Examples include comprehensive word embeddings trained on large corpora, or embeddings of commonly known knowledge graphs, such as DBpedia or Wikidata
* Descriptions of a reusable research prototype / service supporting a given research hypothesis;
* Descriptions of a dataset produced by a novel algorithm;
* Descriptions of community shared software frameworks that can be extended or adapted to support scientific study and experimentation;
* Benchmarking, focusing on datasets and algorithms for comprehensible and systematic evaluation of existing and future systems;
* Development of new evaluation methodologies, and their demonstration in an experimental study.

3. Call for Papers - In-Use Track
*******************************************
Semantic technologies are reaching maturity on and off the web. The In-Use track at ESWC 2020 provides a forum for the community to explore the benefits and challenges of applying semantic technologies in concrete, practical applications, in contexts ranging from industry to government and science. We are especially interested in applications that use the emerging knowledge graphs or semantic annotations on the web together with data mining, machine learning, or natural language processing techniques to the benefit of concrete, real-life scenarios. We are also looking for descriptions of applied and validated industry solutions as software tools, systems or architecture that benefit from the adoption of semantic technologies.
Importantly, papers presenting applications in use of semantic technologies should provide evidence that there is use of the proposed application or tool by the target user group, preferably outside the group that conducted the development. A main focus of the submission should be on the way semantics and semantic technologies are impacting this development, through benefiting the intended use case, as well as, if relevant, through the added challenges they introduce.
Topics of Interest:
We invite the submission of original papers organized around some of the following aspects:
* Description and analysis of concrete problems and user requirements for applying semantic technologies in a specific domain
* Descriptions of how Semantic Web resources (ontologies, datasets, software, standards, etc) are being used in practice
* Analysis and evaluation of usability and uptake of Semantic Web tools and technologies
* Scalability analysis and large scale deployment in real world scenarios
* Assessment of the pros and cons of using semantic technologies to solve a particular and practical problem
* Comparison of semantic technologies with alternative approaches that use conventional or competing technologies
* Learned lessons and best practices from deploying and using an application or service based on Semantic Web technologies
* Assessment of costs and benefits of implementing, deploying, using, and managing Semantic Web technologies
* Analysis of risks and opportunities of using Semantic Web technologies in organizations with respect to their businesses and customers
* Descriptions of alternative semantic technologies being deployed in practice
* Mobile apps based on semantic technologies that have substantial user base
* Applications in domain-specific areas such as Health & Life Sciences, Digital Libraries & Cultural Heritage, Media & Entertainment, Smart Cities, and Open Government
