Hi everyone,
Is Wikidata high quality? What items are due for promotion to the showcase?
Answering these questions would require reviewing millions of items on a
regular basis and that would take far too long.
So we're training machine learning models to evaluate the quality of items
in Wikidata automatically. In order to train these machine learning models,
we need to label a bunch of items by their quality level [1]. I'm writing
to invite you to join our working group.
We're trying to get ~5,000 items labeled. We'll use this labeled data to
train a machine learning model for ORES [2], and use it to categorize the
rest of items in Wikidata, look for trends & coverage biases, etc.
If you want to help us train the model, you can navigate to our labeling
campaign information page [3] and sign up list [4].
Many Thanks,

Hi there,
I need to do a Wikidata query of the Black Lunch Table task list that
includes location-specific faceted searching:
So for the upcoming Boston event, would like to be able to search by
- residence (P551)
- place of birth (P19)
- place of death (P20)
- educated at (P69)
and maybe....
- employed by
Here's the Listeria table:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Black_Lunch_Table/Lists_of_A…
It would be for this event:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Black_Lunch_Table/Boston_Uni…
The query would provide data that could be curated / vetted / updated on
Wikidata to populate the Listeria table on the Boston 1 page.
Thanks in advance for any help with this.

I am currently in Suriname, where I gave a talk on open
data/wikipedia/wikidata. Next week there will be a handson session, where I
hope to get as much contribution from this country as possible.
When I demonstrated the WDQS, the audience took offense in the way Suriname
is depicted on the map view used in the WDQS. There is a territorial
dispute with the neighboring country Guyana, called the Tigri area(
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tigri_Area). In the WDQS this area is
currently being drawn as being part of Guyana. The maps drawn in the
WIkipedia article shows how the issue is dealt with here when drawing maps.
i.e. The area is explicitly drawn as being a territorial dispute, which is
more factual.
Any idea's on how to get a similar mapview on the WDQS? Thanks to Wikipedia
Zero, where people can have free access to Wikidata (even in remote
area's), there is quite some potential to get people involved in adding
local data. Having the current mapview is counter productive.
Cheers,
Andra
Hi all,
If you have a moment spare, please take a look at this WMF grant application
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Wikimedian_in_Residence_at_U…>.
Feedback and endorsements will be greatly appreciated!
The application is to extend John Cummings' brilliant work making UNESCO
content available on Wikimedia projects, and includes a portion allocated
to me to continue the work on importing data from UNESCO and partner
agencies into Wikidata. It also covers improvements to the workflow and
documentation for the data import process, building on our previous work
getting the following pages together:
Wikidata:Data Import Hub
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Data_Import_Hub>
Wikidata:Data donation
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Data_donation>4
Wikidata:Data Import Guide
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Data_Import_Guide>
Wikidata:Partnerships and data imports
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Partnerships_and_data_imports>
As well as the data import work described above, the main goals are:
1. UNESCO’s publication workflows incorporate sharing open license
content on Wikimedia projects.
2. Support other Intergovernmental Organisations and the wider public to
share content on Wikimedia projects.
3. Support Wikimedia contributors to easily discover and use UNESCO
content and the documentation produced.
Many thanks!

On behalf of the Wikimedia Foundation Board Elections Committee, I am pleased to announce that self-nominations are now being accepted for the 2017 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees Elections.[1]
The Board of Trustees (Board) is the decision-making body that is ultimately responsible for the long-term sustainability of the Wikimedia Foundation,[2] so we value wide input into its selection. More information about this role can be found at <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017/Board_o…>. Please read the letter from the Board of Trustees calling for candidates here: <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017/Board_o…>.
The candidacy submission phase will last from April 7 (00:00 UTC) to April 20 (23:59 UTC) and occurring on Meta-Wiki at <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017/Board_o…>
We will also be accepting questions to ask the candidates from April 7 to April 20. You can submit your questions on Meta-Wiki at <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017/Board_o…>
Once the questions submission period has ended on April 20, the Elections Committee will then collate the questions for the candidates to respond to beginning on April 21.
The goal of this process is to fill the three community-selected seats on the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees. The election results will be used by the Board itself to select its new members.
The full schedule for the Board elections is as follows. All dates are inclusive, that is, from the beginning of the first day (UTC) to the end of the last.
* April 7 (00:00 UTC) - April 20 (23:59 UTC): Board nominations
* April 7 - April 20: Board candidates questions submission period
* April 21 - April 30: Board candidates answer questions
* May 1 - May 14: Board voting period
* May 15-19: Board vote checking
* May 20: Board result announcement goal
In addition to the Board elections, we will also soon be holding elections for the following roles:
* Funds Dissemination Committee (FDC)
** There are five positions being filled. More information about this election can be found at <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017/Funds_D…>.
* Funds Dissemination Committee Ombudsperson (Ombuds)
** One position is being filled. More information about this election can be found at <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017/Funds_D…>.
Please note that this year the Board of Trustees elections will be held before the FDC and Ombuds elections. Candidates who are not elected to the Board are explicitly permitted and encouraged to submit themselves as candidates to the FDC or Ombuds positions after the results of the Board elections are announced.
More information on this year's elections can be found at <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017>.
Please feel free to post a note about the election on your project's village pump. Any questions related to the election can be posted on the talk page on Meta, or sent to the election committee's mailing list, <board-elections AT wikimedia.org>.
On behalf of the Election Committee,
Katie Chan, Chair, Board Election Committee

Hello all,
The international Wikimedia conference will settle in Montreal (Q340)
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q340> on August 11-13. As the call for
submission is about to start, let's talk about what you would like to see
happening about Wikidata.
Do you have a project of submissing a talk, workshop, meetup? Which topics
would you like to talk about with the development team? Let's talk about
our ideas on Wikidata:Wikimania 2017
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Wikimania_2017>!
Thanks,

Hi all,
I am building a Question Answering System for Wikidata (I will put the
demo live in May) and would like to be able to ask quesitons like "Give
me the cities in Alaska". To query Wikidata I am using the Wikidata
SPARQL endpoint.
The SPARQL query for this question looks the following way [0]:
SELECT DISTINCT ?x ?xLabel
{
# All things in Alaska
?x (wdt:P131+ | wdt:P276) wd:Q797 .
# All cities
?x ((wdt:P106 | wdt:P39 | wdt:P31) / wdt:P279*) wd:Q515 .
SERVICE wikibase:label { bd:serviceParam wikibase:language "en" . }
}
As it needs to join over two very large sets (the set of all cities and
the set of all things in Alaska) the query times out. Do you have an
idea how I could write the query without getting a timeout?
Thank you ;)

Hello all,
We’ve been working on a new data type that allows you to link to the
*geographical
shapes* that are now stored on Commons. This data type will be deployed on
Wikidata on *April 17th*.
This data type refers to the geographical shapes that are enabled on
Wikimedia Commons since the beginning of this year. Here you can find more
information about this <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Maps>.
The property creators will be able to create properties with this geoshape
data type by selecting “Geographical shape” in the data type list.
When the property is created, you can use it in statements, and when
filling the value, if you start typing a string, you can choose the name of
a geoshape in the list of what exists on Commons.
[image: Screenshot test geoshape in Wikidata.png]
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Screenshot_test_geoshape_in_Wikidat…>
One thing to note: We currently do not export statements that use this
datatype to RDF. They can therefore not be queried in the Wikidata Query
Service. The reason is that we are still waiting for geoshapes to get
stable URIs. This is handled in this ticket
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T161527>.
Before the deployment, you can test it on http://test.wikidata.org (see for
example the property “geotest” on Q22 <https://test.wikidata.org/wiki/Q22>).
If you have any question, feel free to ask!
Cheers,
