Hello all,
This is the second day of our birthday-celebrating week, and I have some
very cool news for you.
The Wikidata Query Service already had very nice ways to display the
results, as graphs, bubble chart and map. Now we have improved this with *four
new types of charts:* line chart, bar chart, scatter chart and area chart!
This is already deployed on the Query Service <https://query.wikidata.org/>
and you can try it directly by using one of the example queries : line chart
<https://query.wikidata.org/embed.html#%23Population%20of%20countries%20shar…>,
bar chart
<https://query.wikidata.org/embed.html#%23Battles%20per%20year%20per%20conti…>,
scatter chart
<https://query.wikidata.org/embed.html#%23Number%20of%20films%20by%20year%20…>,
area chart
<https://query.wikidata.org/embed.html#%23Cancer%20deaths%20per%20year%20and…>.
Some of these views are animated, and you can play with it by moving the
cursor over the chart, clicking on the legend labels to filter...
Thanks a lot to Jonas who worked very hard on this so these new features
are perfectly ready for the birthday! If you have questions or find a bug,
please ping one of us.
We also worked on documentation: have a look to the page *presenting all
the types of views
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:SPARQL_query_service/Wikidata_Query_…>*
that WDQS can provide. Don't hesitate to improve it or translate it in your
language! Again, thank you Jonas for spending time on improving the doc.
Speaking about documentation, I need to present you this very cool *guide
to SPARQL and the Wikidata Query Service
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:TweetsFactsAndQueries/A_Guide_To_WDQS>*
written by WikidataFacts. We know that understanding how SPARQL works is
not easy for beginners, and every help is welcomed to improve our actual
documentation :) Feel free to give your feedbacks about this work. Thanks
WikidataFacts for this birthday present!
Last but not least, we have a story about queries. Jens and Cornelius wrote
a blog post called *"10 cool queries for Wikidata that will blow your mind.
Number 7 will shock you.
(also available in German
<https://blog.wikimedia.de/2016/10/30/10-coole-wikidata-abfragen-die-dir-neu…>)
That's not on BuzzFeed (Q5003490) <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5003490>
but on the WMDE blog and it's a nice way to introduce newcomers to queries.
Thanks for sharing!
That's all for today, I let you enjoy your Sunday and I'll be back
tomorrow. By the way, Sunday is a good day to try new queries: if you want
to share yours, ask for help on a difficult one or give some advices, join
us on Twitter with the hashtag #SundayQuery

;)
Cheers,

Hi, how about a wikipedia about objects?
Instead of generic articles of , for example, "Ballpoint pen" or "Bic
cristal" it would be "Ballpoint pen Bic cristal 2014", using Wikidata
propreties and doing these for millions of objects would allow people to
have an open, free, universal and structured place to refer specific objects
.
Project page: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiObject
grettings
... and maybe you want to help?
I have prepared a little present for the upcoming 4th birthday of Wikidata.
But in order to make it really great, it needs your input.
I won't tell you what it is in this email. It will be announced next week.
But if you want to contribute and make it a great launch, go to
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Everything_is_connected
and learn more. If you want to be surprised, then forget about this email :)
Let's not spread it yet widely on them social media sites and similar
things, but let's polish the whole thing for a week in the open :)

Denny
Hi Lydia,
That would be fabulous. Would 3pm EDT on 11/3 work for you?

Dear Wikidata contributors,
I am a computer scientist at the University of Manchester. We have
developed a tool that can acquire general knowledge in the form of axioms
from data. We have run our tool on Wikidata and produced lots of axioms
that, to us, look like interesting axioms.
We need your help to evaluate the results!
What is required from you:
- knowledge of a domain/topic of Wikidata and some understanding of the
W3C Web Ontology Language (OWL);
- 20 minutes of your time.
What you could get:
- axioms to build/improve the background knowledge ontology for you
domain (and thus improve data access/retrieval);
- interesting correlations in your domain that could hint at modelling
or usage idiosyncrasies.
How it would work:
- contact us;
- pick your domain/topic, e.g. museums, libraries, articles, books,
hotels, etc.;
- take an online survey consisting of 60 random axioms about your domain
where you are asked to judge each axiom as "correct" , "false", or "don't
know" and indicate how interesting it is on the linear scale (a survey
should take around 20 minutes to complete).
Please let us know if you are interested or know someone who may be
interested. We need your help!
Kind regards,
Slava
Hello folks,
Wikidata's fourth birthday is tomorrow, and we have a lots of things for
you!
Some Wikidata editors organize events for the birthday on several
continents \o/ Three meetups already took place in Turin (Q495)
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q495>, San Francisco (Q62)
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q62> and Tokyo (Q1490)
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1490>, next ones are tomorrow in Paris (Q90)
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q90> and Utrecht (Q803)
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q803>. You can find all the other places and
dates here <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Fourth_Birthday/Events>.
You can also follow what happens on Twitter with #Wikidatabirthday
<https://twitter.com/hashtag/wikidatabirthday?f=tweets&vertical=default&src=…>
.
During the week to come, I'll share with you the gifts that the Wikidata
team and some community members prepared for the birthday. These are very
exciting new features, visuals, games... You can check every day the
Project Chat, the mailing-list and the birthday page
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Fourth_Birthday> to see what's
new :)
I will also share with you some user stories, blog posts and other stories
that people wrote for the birthday. If you write something, please send me
the link so I can highlight it during the week!
Let's start with this birthday user template
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Template:User_Wikidata_birthday_2016> that
you can add to your user page, made by Pigsonthewing, thank you :) Thanks
also Charlie for the banner on the birthday page
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Fourth_Birthday>!
I can't wait to start this birthday week and share all these nice gifts
with you :)
Cheers,

Hello, Wikidata community!
My name is Daniel Bogre Udell and I'm a co-founder at Wikitongues, a
non-profit organization and international volunteer community dedicated to
defending linguistic diversity. We're building the world's first public
archive of every language in the world, and counting some very enthusiastic
Wikimedians among our ranks, we're excited to announce that we've submitted
a proposal
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Wikitongues_Poly_Feature_Set…>
for
this upcoming round of Wikimedia Project Grants to support Poly, an open
source platform for sharing and learning languages.
Poly stands to improve the language content for both Wiktionary and
Wikivoyages by creating a broader network of language content aggregation.
Through it, the breadth of these projects will be expanded and their
language accuracy improved. Furthermore, in gaining access to new language
communities working with Wikitongues, Wikipedia stands to benefit from the
incubation of new language editions.
We're eager for community feedback, so if you think there are more points
of alignment between Poly and Wikidata, please let us know in the
project's discussion
section
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants_talk:Project/Wikitongues_Poly_Featur…>
.
Finally, if you believe this project to be worthwhile, we would be honored
to have your endorsement, which you can enter in the project's Endorsements
section
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Wikitongues_Poly_Feature_Set…>.
We would also greatly appreciate it if you can spread the word among your
fellow Wikimedians.
Thank you very much!
Warmly,
Daniel Bogre Udell

Hello all!
The Wikimedia Foundation, in cooperation with Wikimedia Deutschland, is
currently exploring an opportunity to potentially secure additional
resources to expedite development work on Structured Data for Commons [1].
In light of this, we would like feedback on a 3 year plan that potentially
accelerates software development for both Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata if
these resources should become available. We would like to invite you to
participate in a conversation about the plan [2] and look forward to your
comments and thoughts.
