Dear list and GLAM-Wiki professionals and enthusiasts in particular,
The Luxembourg Competency Network on Digital Cultural Heritage is
developing a Shared Authority File, to combine the knowledge from national
heritage institutions and to increase the impact of the member
institutions' digitised collections.
The Shared Authority File uses Wikibase as its main data store and internal
user interface, and has created an extension that might be of relevance to
the broader GLAM sector: A datatype for Extended Date Time Format compliant
statements.
Wikibase contains a datetime representation based on ISO 8601:2004
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_8601>. The project extended the Wikibase
software through an Extended Data Time Format extension, which includes ISO
8601:2019 <https://www.iso.org/obp/ui/#iso:std:iso:8601:-1:ed-1:v1:en>, and
their extensions in a new datatype which can then be utilized within a
Wikibase instance.
This resulted in two open source products. A library
<https://github.com/ProfessionalWiki/EDTF> for the validation and
humanisation of EDTF dates in PHP, and an extension
<https://github.com/ProfessionalWiki/WikibaseEdtf> to WikiBase to use this
library. Both are available as open source software for all to use and
improve. The humanisation is translated in various languages using
Translate.wiki <https://translatewiki.net/wiki/FAQ>.
With this email I’m asking support for the inclusion of this work into the
fall release of the Wikibase Docker bundle. You can voice your support
through this ticket: Include the EDTF Datatype extension in the Fall 2021
Wikibase Docker release <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T280656>
This would allow other GLAM initiatives using Wikibase to easily make use
of the EDTF standard within their own Wikibase deployments.
Feedback and contributions to the repositories for this extension as a
stand alone product are also welcomed!
Thanks for your attention and best wishes,
Maarten Brinkerink

Dea all,
Apologies! The original email I sent was meant for the Wikibase Stakeholder

In any case, I assume many of you are members of both lists. If this email

Dear All,
I wonder whether there is a simple way to retrieve dates with the precision in they have been put into a wikibase.
Using SPARQL I get all years such as "1749" as "1 January 1749" statements, no matter whether the person is born that day or not. Should I run different searches?
Best,
Olaf

Dear all,
After a productive meeting yesterday with a few members of the user group,
we decided on next steps how to keep the official affiliation of the group
with the WMF going forward.
One of the key elements is the annual reports. We need to maintain these
and submit every year. They can be very very simple and short, but there is
also opportunity to develop them into a good documentation resource for
group activities.
Crucially, we want to encourage at least a few people to help maintain
those as active / helpful documents, rather than just 1 or 2 people having
to do it purely as an admin task in the end of the year.
Everyone in this group is welcome to add important events or discussions /
outcomes that concern the whole group. The 2020 report has not been
submitted yet, so you all still have a chance to contribute to it here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikibase_Community_User_Group/Reports/2020
And let’s get an early start on the 2021 report here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikibase_Community_User_Group/Reports/2021
Types of things that can go in the report pages include group meetings,
significant announcements on the mailing list, in-depth discussions on the
Telegram chat, etc. Community members are also encouraged to add their
Wikibase projects or extensions, especially if it’s something that can help
or has helped the whole user group through discussion on the chat, etc..
And we should be documenting discussions on desired features in the
reports, too, because these could potentially justify WMF/WMDE
contributions/assistance to the group in the future.
Let me know if there are any questions / concerns. There will be more
announcements soon regarding the formal selection process for official user
group contacts, so that the group keeps its status within WMF and continues
to be a helpful place for everyone here :-)
Kind regards,
Lozana (aka not an official group contact, but just a long-term group
member)

Hello,
In April, the Wikimedia Foundation notified the Wikibase Community User
Group that its annual report due to February had not been submitted yet
[1]. This report is necessary for the user group to stay a recognized
affiliate of the Wikimedia Foundation. Following discussions on Meta (see
previous link) and on the Wikibase group on Telegram, several issues have
been identified, like the lack of official group contacts for the user
group.
I propose a dedicated online meeting on June 9 at 16:00 UTC to discuss
these issues [2]. The agenda can of course be discussed and improved.
