Dear Wikibase Community,
We are thrilled to announce that Wikimania 2025 will be held in Nairobi, Kenya on August 6-9, with a pre-conference and Hackathon on August 5. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Wikimania, and our theme—"Wikimania at 20: Inclusivity. Impact. Sustainability."—reflects our ongoing commitment to shaping a global and inclusive Wikimedia movement.
As part of this celebration, we invite you to contribute your expertise and creativity by submitting program proposals for sessions that align with our theme. Your ideas matter. Proposals can be presented in various formats:
● Remote presentations from the comfort of your home or workplace.
● Pre-recorded sessions to share at the conference.
● Onsite presentations in Nairobi, Kenya.
To help spark ideas, here are a few topics that may align with the conference theme:
● Share insights on how the Wikibase platform can empower underrepresented communities and foster cross-cultural collaboration.
● Demonstrate projects using Wikibase to facilitate linked open data solutions with measurable benefits for researchers, institutions, or public knowledge.
● Discuss strategies for maintaining and expanding Wikibase installations while ensuring long-term engagement and community growth.
We believe your unique perspectives as Wikibase users are integral to this conversation, and your contributions will make a lasting impact on the Wikimedia community.
Proposals must be submitted on or before March 31, 2025. For submission guidelines, visit Wikimania 2025 Program Submission Site at https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2025:Program .
Have suggestions, comments, or requests? Please email at wikimania(a)wikimedia.org , and our team of dedicated volunteers will be happy to assist you.
We look forward to seeing your contributions that highlight the continued impact of Wikibase at this landmark event. Let’s work together to make Wikimania 2025 a truly memorable celebration of free knowledge and community collaboration.
Warm regards,
Butch Bustria

Dear Wikibase Community,
Today we’re releasing the first version of Wikibase Suite Deploy 4. With
this new major version, we’re shipping the following improvements:
Highlights:
- MediaWiki 1.43 + Wikibase
Wikibase Suite Deploy 4 ships Wikibase Image 4, which is based on MediaWiki
1.43, the latest stable release. All extensions have been updated to their
1.43 branches. This of course includes the Wikibase extension which now
ships the new REST API. That means that on Wikbase Suite Deploy 4 you can
now read and write your data using the REST API!
- User Defined Extensions
In Wikibase Suite Deploy 4, you can add additional MediaWiki extensions to
your stack. We provide a simple interface for you to load your custom
extensions. For more information, check out the documentation on User
Defined Extensions.
- Streamlined URLs and HTTP traffic routing
For Wikibase Suite Deploy 4, we refactored and simplified the HTTP proxy
infrastructure as well as updated the default URLs. Wikibase Suite Deploy 4
will now serve on the following URLs:
MediaWiki with the Wikibase extension: https://wikibase.example
MediaWiki REST API including Wikibase REST API:
https://wikibase.example/w/rest.php
Front end for WDQS (Query GUI): https://query.wikibase.example
SPARQL API endpoint for WDQS: https://query.wikibase.example/sparql
QuickStatements tool: https://wikibase.example/tools/quickstatements
Of course, the base domain (here wikibase.example) needs to be customized
to match your domain name. Checkout deploy/template.env and update your
deploy/.env file.
- Simplified WDQS front end configuration
Wikibase Suite Deploy 4 now exposes the configuration file for
wdqs-frontend in the deploy/config directory in order to simplify
customization of settings such as title, logo and query examples. After the
first launch, the config will appear in the directory.
How to get it:
- New installation
To install Wikibase Suite Deploy, follow the instructions in our
documentation.
- Updating from earlier versions of Wikibase Suite Deploy
For information on how to upgrade from earlier versions of Wikibase Suite
Deploy, check out our upgrading documentation.

Dear Wikibase community,
I created a list of existing videos in which individuals and groups explain
how they set up/make use of their Wikibases. I'm sure it can be helpful for
one or the other among you.
If you can think of more, please share them in this thread! :-)
