Hi everyone,

Our next Wikidata+Wikibase office hours will be held on Wednesday, July 12th 2023 at 16:00 UTC (18:00 Berlin) in the Wikidata Telegram group.

The Wikidata and Wikibase office hours are online events where the development team presents what we have been working on over the past quarter, and the community is welcome to ask questions and discuss important issues related to the development of Wikidata and Wikibase.

Pardon my ignorance, as I only attended partly one of the Office hour events on telegram (while this might have been addressed), but I am still confused as to what are the benefits of this Live event format if it is text based *(just like regular telegram chat) and includes presentations that can easily be pre-recorded...no? I appreciate that it exists as some of the key people show up, but why not on jitsi *(so exchange can be visual and sonic)+why not in multi-threaded text chat *(so that topics and interest sub-groups can branch out)? Maybe this is only for developers and not me as a user, so I should not even be in the target audience? If so, could you add DEV to the name? ;-)

Best Z. Blace
Hi Z. Blace, Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Yes, this has come up a couple of times, and I want to clarify that our office hours are just one of the ways we engage the community and provide development updates. We also have other formats, such as the Wikibase Live video calls organized by Valerie for the Wikibase community.

We maintain this text-based format because it creates an inclusive environment where people who prefer text-based communication can actively participate and ask questions. Not everyone may be comfortable engaging in video calls, so this format allows everyone to be involved. Additionally, the text-based format makes it easy to document the discussions and allows community members to review them later. We chose Telegram as the platform because it is widely used within the community, ensuring accessibility and familiarity for many participants. Unfortunately, it seems that Telegram does not have a built-in multithreaded capability. Let me know if you have any ideas around that.

And no, the office hours are not exclusive to developers :-)
They are open to all users interested in Wikidata and Wikibase. During these sessions, we discuss not only development plans but also other interesting non-dev things happening in the Wikidata and Wikibase communities.

We hope to see you there.
